With Governor Ron DeSantis’ approval of the Freedom First Budget, Florida reaffirms its standing as having the most comprehensive, data-driven juvenile justice system in the nation. These strategic investments will continue to bolster Florida’s unparalleled commitment to public safety and efforts to provide better opportunities for Florida’s youth.
“Florida continues to be a safer place for its residents and visitors because of the leadership and tenacious dedication of Governor Ron DeSantis – who is unquestionably the best governor in the nation,” said Florida Department of Juvenile Justice Secretary Eric Hall. “Florida is fortunate to have a Governor and legislature so committed to supporting our dedicated direct care staff who work hard every day to proudly serve our families and communities. Their support is vital as our agency, providers, and community partners work to enhance and expand innovative services that will lead to improved outcomes and opportunities for the youth in our care and I cannot thank them enough.”
Key investments provided in the FY 2022-2023 budget include:
- Increased Pay for Juvenile Detention Officers (JDO) and Juvenile Probation Officers (JPO) — This funding will improve the salaries of existing staff and allow DJJ to attract and retain talented professionals in the current competitive job market. As a result, JDOs and JPOs will benefit from a massive salary increase between $8,000 to $12,000. The hourly rate for JDOs will increase from approximately $14 an hour to $19 an hour, and the hourly rate for JPOs will increase from $15 an hour to $20 an hour.
- $5.3 Million to Increase Pay For Contracted Provider Staff — This investment will support DJJ’s contracted providers in retaining and recruiting the hard-working staff who work directly with youth and families in DJJ programs.
- $3.7 Million to Expand Mentorship Opportunities, and Vocational and Educational Services — House Bill 7065 provides funding to increase opportunities and access to mentorships, vocational and educational services for DJJ students. As a result, DJJ students will benefit from additional pathways and opportunities to secure a good-paying job once they exit the DJJ system.
- $1 Million for Electronic Monitoring Enhancements — This funding will provide greater access to more technologically-advanced electronic monitoring equipment to improve the tracking and monitoring of youth in Florida’s communities to increase public safety.
- $413,000 to Increase Oversight and Monitoring of Evidence-Based Services — This funding will improve the agency’s monitoring efforts to ensure DJJ providers are focused on preventing recidivism and improving youth outcomes by ensuring accountability and providing for comprehensive oversight of DJJ’s juvenile residential programs.
