Following the decision by the Supreme Court to overturn the rights of states and communities to require more strenuous “special cause” requirements for concealed carry permits, Representative Fentrice Driskell (D-Tampa), Leader-Designate of the Florida House Democratic Caucus, issued the following statement:
“As the nation grapples with balancing our Second Amendment rights alongside the reality of spiraling gun violence across the country, the Supreme Court has issued a tone-deaf interpretation that takes away communities’ rights to protect themselves.
Places like New York put these common-sense laws in place to deal with their own unique specific needs to protect their communities.
We can only hope that rational voices can cut through the dangerous rhetoric and find balanced solutions to help address this crisis facing our country, such as the bipartisan gun safety bill moving through Congress right now. It’s a move in the right direction, unlike this unfortunate Supreme Court decision.”
