LIBERTY Dental Plan of Florida (LIBERTY) presented the 2022 Minority Scholarship to four Florida dental students including Destiny Corbett and Lisandra Almarales of the University of Florida (UF), Jamisha Scott of Tallahassee Community College (TCC), and Sivan Bugin of Broward College. The scholarship awards each dental student $5,000 to benefit their enrollment in their school’s dental program for the 2022-2023 school year.
“LIBERTY is invested in the communities that we serve, and minority representation in the dental profession is very important to member engagement,” said Heather Stearns, President of LIBERTY Dental Plan of Florida, Inc. “The 2022 Minority Scholarship helps expand career opportunities for African American and Hispanic American dental and hygiene school students.”
The 2022 Minority Scholarship was made eligible for African American and Hispanic American students who are enrolled in a Dental School or Dental Hygiene Program, are a Florida resident, and will practice in Florida for at least two years after program completion. Recipients of the scholarship were chosen based on their academic performance, including GPA, letters of recommendation, and participation in extracurricular activities, school organizations, and community service.
Destiny Corbett has a devotion to advocating for the underserved community. As a dental professional, she emphasizes the importance of exercising patience, understanding, and empathy toward all patients regardless of their educational, socioeconomic, or cultural backgrounds.
As a fourth-year student in the dental program, Lisandra Almarales received the Dr. David A. Grainger Memorial Award from The Division of Operative Dentistry, recognizing her for outstanding leadership, professionalism, clinical expertise, and exceptional care for patients.
Jamisha Scott is entering her last year in the Dental Hygiene Program at TCC. She became a dental assistant in 2017 and shows tremendous work ethic and dedication to her career.
In an effort to encourage better health habits among underserved populations, Sivan Bugin devoted her social media to spreading information. She created a TikTok account to demonstrate improper and proper hygiene techniques and reached 494.7 thousand people.
