Representative Dan Daley (D-Coral Springs) is requesting the Joint Legislative Auditing Committee (the “Committee”) direct the State Auditor General to perform an operational audit of the North Springs Improvement District (“NSID”). See attached letter.
There have been numerous complaints about the District’s operation and actions, including nepotism, cronyism, unethical practices, and potential illegalities. Recently, local news outlets have reported on the District Director’s use of an ethics loophole to pay himself $240,000 in real estate commission. Representative Dan Daley is working on a bill to close this loophole in the upcoming 2023 Legislative Session.
“Our public officials must be held to the highest standards of transparency and accountability. I am deeply concerned about the potential for further unethical practices at the North Springs Improvement District, and that is why I am calling for an investigation by the Joint Legislative Auditing Committee and the State Auditor General into the actions of Rod Colon and others. The pubic has a right to know what’s happening, and to be certain that their public officials are behaving in a way that is proper and appropriate. To prevent future abuses of power like this, I am currently working on legislation to close loopholes like what’s happened here, preventing anyone in the public trust from profiting on unethical behavior,” said Representative Dan Daley.
