State Representative Yvonne Hayes Hinson (D-Gainesville) will host two Resource Summits for Formerly Incarcerated Citizens in Ocala and Gainesville, Florida. The Ocala Summit will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in Ocala, Florida on Thursday, Feb. 2 at the Mary Sue Rich Community Center. The Gainesville Summit will be held from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Gainesville, Florida on Saturday, Feb.18 at the Santa Fe College Charles L. Blount Center.
The two summits intend to help formerly incarcerated citizens learn how to pay their fines and fees with the court system to restore their voting rights, address housing, and navigate employment in Alachua and Marion Counties so they can feel empowered to be productive members of society.
Attendees at both Summits will be able to listen to presentations by community partners such as the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition, the Alachua County Supervisor of Elections, the Marion County Supervisor of Elections, Florida Cares Charity, the Alachua County Clerk of the Circuit Court, the Gainesville Police Department, the Gainesville Housing Authority, the Ocala Housing Authority, CareerSource Florida, the Alachua County Housing Authority, the Marion County Clerk of Court and Comptroller, and FLIP FLOP Support Groups.
Representative Hinson says, “Citizens returning from incarceration continue to face barriers and conditions as if they are still incarcerated. I am hosting this Resource Summit not only to educate returning citizens on the possibilities but also to provide a gateway to opportunities. This empowering Summit will hopefully open doors to allow them to have their fees paid, access housing, find jobs, and more.”
