Gun Violence plagues Asian Community on Lunar New Year

The Lunar New Year is a time in the Chinese culture to celebrate fortune, happiness, and health. Unfortunately, this Asian cultural celebration was interrupted by a deadly mass shooting in Monterey Park, California, an area with a large Asian immigrant population. Monterey Park is known as a beautiful, quiet, and safe neighborhood, but now the dance hall will be a memorial for this shocking massacre.

“This is another example of how gun violence has become rampant in our communities and why the need for mental health awareness is so great,” said Senator Osgood when told about the latest mass shooting on Sunday. “Older Americans face many challenges, especially isolation. This leads to depression and increased risk for other mental health issues.

While the police are still investigating the motive for the shooting, it is very clear that this community has been rocked to its core.

Families deserve to celebrate the holidays in peace — mass shootings and gun violence should have no place in our communities. It is crucial to recognize the role that guns in the hands of those with mental health issues play, to prevent future tragedies. Firearms in conjunction with mental health issues makes even the most everyday problems more deadly.
