Representative Dan Daley (D-Coral Springs) has filed House Bill 585 Instructions on Emergency First Aid for Choking. This legislation was proposed by students who participated in the Democracy in Action Initiative. It would require a poster in each public-school cafeteria, that contains step-by-step instructions on how to provide emergency first aid for choking.
The bill idea came from McArthur High School in Hollywood, Fla. It was created as part of the Democracy in Action Initiative, which invites students to propose authentic and original bills for the Legislative Session. The Democracy in Action Initiative promotes and supports civic education and engages students in real-world government and decision-making.
“I had the opportunity to meet my former boss, Representative Ari Porth, because of the Democracy in Action Initiative, which is a student bill proposal contest within Broward County. I am proud to continue this tradition and sponsor a student-proposed bill in the Florida House of Representatives. By requiring emergency first aid instructions for choking in public-school cafeterias, this bill will ensure the health and safety of students in the event of an emergency,” said Representative Daley.
