On Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2023, Representative Marie Woodson (D-Hollywood) filed House Bill 575. This bill would eliminate out-of-pocket costs for diagnostic and supplemental breast imaging (such as MRIs, ultrasounds, and diagnostic mammograms) when medically necessary. These exams can be extremely expensive and require people to pay high out-of-pocket costs – all before more expensive treatment even begins. Senate Bill 460 is the companion bill filed by Senator Lori Berman (D-Boca Raton).
Representative Marie Woodson (D-Hollywood) issued the following statement:
“As someone who has personally benefitted from early detection, I cannot stress enough how impactful and important this legislation is. Breast cancer is a life-or-death situation, and breaking the barriers to accessing care is paramount. We all know someone who has been affected by Breast cancer. Early detection saves lives and I look forward to passing this crucial legislation with Senator Berman.”
Senator Lori Berman (D-Boca Raton) issued the following statement: “As a seven-year breast cancer survivor, I am grateful for the treatment I was afforded. As soon as I knew my mammogram revealed a mass that subsequent testing determined was breast cancer, I was able to go forward with a treatment plan. Not everyone has the same means. I hope to change that with this lifesaving legislation.”
