First Awards Through Broadband Opportunity Program Include $1.5 Million For District 40 Residents In The City Of Homestead, The Redlands, And Florida City

Posted on February 2, 2023

During a press conference this morning, Governor Ron DeSantis announced the first set of awards through the Broadband Opportunity Grant Program. Over $144 million has been awarded for 58 projects, all aiming to expand broadband internet access to underserved communities in Florida. The award is set to impact nearly 160,000 individuals; ranging from residential, educational, community, and business locations.

“Broadband internet access creates jobs and enhances educational opportunities for Floridians. I look forward to continued investments through this program to ensure Florida families have access to important resources no matter where they live.” -Governor Ron DeSantis

Amidst the 41 Florida counties recognized, $1.5 million has been allocated to assist the City of Homestead, the Redlands, and Florida City. The grant awards will provide fiber to the home (FTTH) services of nearly 800 underserved residents in the 40th District. Additionally, 10 businesses/institutions within Miami-Dade County will benefit by receiving download and upload speeds of 1 Gbps or higher.

“Broadband internet access is vital for educational and professional development, telehealth relations, and staying up to date. Thanks to Governor DeSantis, hundreds of constituents in District 40 will benefit from the generous award he’s presented.” -Senator Ana Maria Rodriguez

The Broadband Opportunity Program is operated by the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO). The program will fund the distribution and installation of the broadband framework to eligible residents and businesses.
