Appalled by the proposal of legislation that would prohibit undocumented students from accessing in-state tuition, State Senator Victor Torres issued the following statement:
“Just a few years ago, the Lieutenant Governor fiercely championed a bill (HB 851) that allowed undocumented students to live out their dreams of getting an education and contributing to our society. Not long after that, we created legislation allowing those same undocumented people to serve us in the Florida Bar (HB 755). We did that because we understand the value of giving a hard-working student the tools to succeed and contribute as an American. What happened to that understanding? ”
“Many Republicans have claimed that they support opportunity. Yet, they have had no trouble turning this idea they previously championed, into another culture war issue. There is no excuse to deny students the opportunity to pursue their dreams and reach their full potential.”
