After the Senate Health Policy Committee today heard SB 300: Pregnancy and Parenting Support, State Senator Tracie Davis (D-Jacksonville) offered the following statement.
“This bill, and the 15-week abortion ban before it, set a dangerous and frightening precedent in Florida. The government has no place in my, or any woman’s, home and has no right to influence or restrict private, personal medical decisions.
I would like to thank every single person who came to testify and share their stories. Both choosing to have a child and choosing an abortion are decisions that are not easily made, and it takes a considerable amount of bravery to come and share that, even if you were restricted in your time. Nobody should feel ashamed or embarrassed for their medical decisions, and I want you to know that your story matters.
This bill’s exceptions for rape, abuse, and incest do nothing to help the majority of women who survive those acts. This bill simply endangers women and children. This bill is unprecedented government overreach into the lives of women, and I will fight it every step of the way.”
