Senate Democratic Leader Lauren Book Responds to Governor Signing Sweeping & Disruptive Tort Reform Bill

Posted on March 24, 2023

In response to the Governor’s quick signing of the sweeping civil justice reform bill HB 837: Civil Remedies, Senate Democratic Leader Lauren Book (D-Davie) issued the statement below:

“The so-called free state of Florida has chosen to side with big insurance corporations over everyday people – over victims of tragedies, Parkland families, and survivors of human trafficking. Despite strong objection from Floridians across the political spectrum, the Republican-controlled Legislature shoved through a bad piece of policy, now Florida law, which goes against the best interests of the people of our state.

In the last week alone we’ve seen and heard of tens of thousands of lawsuits filed to avoid the impact of this bill, which will have a significantly disruptive effect on the civil justice system. People are scared about their access to the courts in the face of big businesses with big pockets – and rightly so.”
