Alberto J. Mora, the former general counsel of the U.S. Navy, will be the featured speaker at Florida State University’s College of Law’s first D’Alemberte & Palmer Lecture in International Human Rights.
In his talk, entitled “Reflections on the Rule of Law in Human Rights,” Mora will draw upon his experiences fighting to end torture and the importance of the rule of law to the protection of human rights.
The event coincides with the 75th anniversary of the United Nations’ adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
In his time with the Navy, Mora led efforts to end the use of cruel and unlawful interrogation practices at the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay. His opposition to the torture of detainees and his work on their behalf earned him a John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award in 2006.
