The Florida Legislature is this week considering the House’s and the Senate’s proposed budget, starting the first of many budget negotiations. The House proposed an impactful financial commitment to the Inmate Welfare Trust Fund, ensuring its adequate funding.
Representative Dianne Hart (D-Tampa) issued the following statement:
“Though this is just the beginning of the budget negotiation process, I am very happy that the Senate remained at $32 million dollars for the Inmate Welfare Trust Fund. I believe that in the future, both the House and the Senate will unify at the $32 million-dollar cap. This is a very special day for our loved ones incarcerated here in the State of Florida, as well as the Correctional Officers who work in the State’s correctional facilities. The proposed budget includes educational opportunities, air conditioning, repairs in our buildings, and all other factors that will contribute to make living in prison more humane for our incarcerated Floridians.”
