Yesterday afternoon, Senate Bill 130, known as Greyson’s Law, passed unanimously through the House floor. The House companion, House Bill 97, was sponsored by Representative Hillary Cassel (D-Dania Beach) before the House motioned to consolidate Greyson’s Law into SB 130.
“Greyson’s life was cut horribly short, but his legacy will live on forever. I carry a picture of Gigs with me to every committee, reminding me of why I serve in the legislature. This passage affirms that we can and must do good in the face of tragedy. I am also thankful for all of the hard work that Ali Kessler, Senator Berman and The Family Law Section of the Florida Bar put into this legislation. Without them, this wouldn’t have been possible,” said Representative Cassel.
Senator Lori Berman (D-Boca Raton) added, “The passage of Greyson’s Law is by far one of my proudest moments in my 13 years as a legislator. The impact of this legislation in protecting children will be long-lasting and far-reaching. Although this was done in Greyson’s name, through the tireless and fighting effort of Gigs’ mother, Ali, we may never fully understand the extent of how many children’s lives may be saved as a result. Thank you to Representative Cassel, the Family Law Section of the Florida Bar, and so many countless others, for their help, support and belief in this bill.”
Ali Kessler (Greyson’s Mother) said, “I’m so thankful that the lawmakers in Florida are seeing the need and making it possible to help other families to keep their children safe. I really wish something like this existed when I was seeking help; but if this can help even just one child, then it’s worth the fight. Greyson’s name will live on forever, and I know this had to have been for some reason. I always knew that he was destined to do great things. This is just the beginning, though there’s still a lot more reform that needs to happen in our family courts. But this is a good start.”
