The Florida Public Service Commission (PSC) today received a briefing on the City of Tallahassee’s plan for a clean energy transition. Resolving to achieve 100 percent clean, renewable energy in city operations by 2035 and community wide by 2050, the transition includes a targeted plan with broad public input.
“As our ‘hometown’ electric utility, I’m pleased that the City of Tallahassee has set renewable energy goals that will continue to reduce the risk of fuel price volatility,” said PSC Chairman Andrew Fay. “The utility’s clean energy roadmap includes a technical study with reachable interim targets to ensure long-term success.”
Michael Ohlsen, Clean Energy & Resource Planning Manager, City of Tallahassee, presented an overview of the city’s clean energy transition plan. He said a priority is ensuring that the most vulnerable residents share in the transition’s benefits, and open community conversations with continuing stakeholder discussions are providing important feedback.
During discussions, some recurring themes included: rate impacts, rooftop solar (renter limitations), electric vehicle charging, smart home technology, and partnerships with universities. Planned policy and action items for all stakeholders—the utility, residents, businesses and developers–center on these themes.
The city plans to publish its Clean Energy Roadmap in July 2023.
