State Voices Florida, a 501©3 which helps grassroots organizations build year-round, long term community involvement through civic engagement, has signed onto a letter opposing Senate Bill 7050 and House Bill 7067. These election bills would make it much harder for people to vote and for third-party voter registration organizations to register people to vote, while not making our elections any safer or more secure.
Organizations that have signed onto the letter include organizations who have helped register hundreds of thousands of citizens to vote over the years and have hands-on experience with the voter registration process and its requirements. State Voices and its partners know that this bill will make it much harder to register people to vote while subjecting groups to pointless penalties and unnecessary regulations as they attempt to do the important work of ensuring people are able to cast a ballot.
The following is a statement from Juanica Fernandes, executive director of State Voices Florida:
“Florida elections are already safe and secure, as Governor Ron DeSantis and Secretary of State Cord Byrd said after the 2022 election. There is no need to put these restrictions on organizations working to register people to vote. But if passed, these registrations could gut community-based voter registration in Florida while not making elections any safer.
“We hope the Legislature will pause and rethink this radical step. It isn’t necessary, and moving on to issues that matter to Floridians and dropping these bills is the right thing to do.”
