The Florida Senate today passed HB 389: Menstrual Hygiene Products in Public Schools, which allows school districts to make menstrual hygiene products available, at no charge, in schools. Studies have shown that one in four students have either left school early or missed school entirely because they didn’t have access to menstrual products. Since the bill was amended, it now heads back to the House.
Senate Democratic Leader Lauren Book (D- Davie), who sponsored a similar measure in the Senate, shared this statement:
“A period should end a sentence – not an education. No one should miss school or have their education compromised because they don’t have access to basic health and hygiene products. Schools already provide necessary sanitary equipment in bathrooms such as toilet paper, soap, and paper towels – menstrual hygiene products are no different.”
