Republicans choose politics over solutions and action on Floridians’ priorities
As the 2023 Florida Legislative Session comes to a close, Senator Shevrin Jones (D-Miami Gardens) released the following statement today:
State legislators are entrusted with the important responsibility of addressing the needs of Floridians. Instead, legislative Republicans chose politics time and time again this session, missing real opportunities to deliver on the priorities on which we were elected to act.
The majority party’s refusal to address the property insurance crisis, skyrocketing housing costs, inadequate access to healthcare, clean water, or gun violence leaves the voices of millions of Floridians unheard. It is shameful that rather than solutions to the challenges facing everyday Floridians, Republicans in Tallahassee pursued dangerous, divisive attacks on public education, reproductive rights, and our most vulnerable, making our communities less free and less safe in the process.
Democrats are actively listening to the voters and are eager to address people’s priorities. Over the coming months, our team will work closely with advocates and organizers to engage and mobilize Floridians to action. Last year, Republicans once again made it tougher for people to vote, passing restrictions to kick Floridians off of vote-by-mail lists after every general election. Our team continues to partner with voting and civil rights organizations across the state in opposition of these voter suppression efforts and will work to add voters back onto the rolls to ensure every voice is heard and represented. I look forward to traveling the state to visit with Floridians and hear how the state can better serve them and their families.
