Statement from Julio Fuentes, CEO of the
Florida State Hispanic Chamber of Commerce
“Florida continues to be a state that supports small businesses, and that is thanks to the hard work of Governor Ron DeSantis alongside the Florida legislature.
While we are disappointed in the passage of a bill like SB 262 and the unintended consequences it might have on small businesses, we encourage Governor DeSantis and the Florida legislature to continue to listen to the voices of small businesses.
SB 262 targets the use of targeted advertising and could prevent small businesses and nonprofits – that often have limited advertising budgets – from accessing the tools they need to create ads that are specific to their audience and demographics. Without digital tools, many small businesses will no longer be able to compete with big box stores, nor would they be able to connect with those who need or want their services. Further, this bill could cause the tech platforms to raise prices, meaning small businesses would lose access to affordable and effective advertising.
Data privacy is an important issue and a conversation that we must be having. But the impacts of SB 262 are just as important to consider. We look forward to continuing to work with Governor DeSantis and state leaders to support small businesses and keep Florida free.”
