Florida Approves Over 60% of Social Studies Instructional Materials Submissions

Posted on May 9, 2023

Commissioner of Education Manny Diaz, Jr. today released Florida’s initial adoption list for K-12 social studies instructional materials. The approved list includes state standards-aligned social studies curriculum for every grade level with 66 of 101 (65.4%) submitted materials approved to date. These textbooks are now available for purchase by school districts across the state.

When submitted materials were initially reviewed upon submission, only 19 of 101 (19%) materials were initially approvable due to inaccurate material, errors and other information that was not aligned with Florida Law. Since then, the Department has worked directly with publishers, who have updated their materials to comply with Florida’s rigorous standards. “Thanks to Governor DeSantis’ and the state’s consistent adherence to high quality, rigorous and factual content, Florida continually earns praise as a leader in education, including the recent number one ranking by U.S. News & World Report,” said Commissioner Manny Diaz, Jr. “To uphold our exceptional standards, we must ensure our students and teachers have the highest quality materials available – materials that focus on historical facts and are free from inaccuracies or ideological rhetoric.”

The Department will continue to work with publishers in an effort to include as many textbooks on the state adoption list as possible. Publishers have the ability to appeal any non-adoption decision. Publishers may submit revisions that subject matter experts will review to ensure that the final materials ultimately meet Florida’s bid specifications and align to Florida’s state academic standards.
