During the 2023 Legislative Session, SB 196, sponsored by Representative Kristen Arrington (D- Kissimmee) in the Florida House, passed with unanimous support. The bill directs school boards to require guidance counselors to advise public middle and high school students of all educational opportunities available to them to gain skills that are in demand in the labor market and how to prepare to obtain postsecondary degrees in technical fields.
Yesterday, the bill was signed into law by the Governor to be effective as of July 1st, 2023.
“This legislation will help our children prepare for a better future by letting them know of all the opportunities available to plan and prepare them for a more diversified economy and workforce,” said Representative Arrington. “Additionally, this information is required to be provided in a language understandable to the students and parents.”
