Groundbreaking ceremony set for May 22
In celebration of the start of construction for the new DeLand SunRail Station, the Florida Department of Transportation, the Central Florida Commuter Rail Commission, Volusia County, and the City of DeLand will gather for an official groundbreaking ceremony Monday morning, May 22.
Due to limited parking, media and attendees are asked to take a special SunRail train from the DeBary SunRail Station to the event site in DeLand. Media should arrive at the DeBary Station no later than 9 a.m. to board the train, which will depart at 9:15 a.m. The DeBary SunRail Station is located at 630 S. Charles Richard Beall Blvd., DeBary, Florida 32713. Media are welcome to bring camera equipment, including wagons and tripods.
The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. at the DeLand Amtrak Station, 2491 Old New York Avenue, DeLand, Florida 32720. Speakers will include FDOT Secretary Jared W. Perdue, P.E.; FDOT District Five Secretary John E. Tyler, P.E.; Volusia County Chair Jeff Brower; and DeLand Mayor Chris Cloudman.
Following the event, at approximately 10:45 a.m., attendees will leave for the DeBary Station on the same train.
The new DeLand SunRail Station will extend SunRail service, adding 12.2 miles from the DeBary Station up to DeLand. Currently, SunRail has 16 stations from DeBary to Poinciana along a 49-mile corridor. The DeLand Station will be the 17th, fulfilling the original vision for 17 stations in the SunRail Commuter Rail System across Central Florida. The Central Florida Commuter Rail Commission is made up of Volusia County, Seminole County, Orange County, the City of Orlando, and Osceola County.
Please wear comfortable shoes for the event and note that this is an outdoor event in a grassy area. Please remember to exercise caution around trains and railroad crossings by keeping off the tracks and obeying all signs and signals. Be smart. Be safe.
