Governor Ron DeSantis today signed the Respecting Their Sacrifice Act to support the families of fallen law enforcement officers.
“In Florida we back the blue and honor the sacrifices that our law enforcement officers and their families have made to protect our communities,” said Governor Ron DeSantis. “I am deeply grateful for their faithful, committed service. With this new law, we are building on our support for law enforcement families and relieving some of the financial stress they have to bear when grieving their loved ones.”
House Bill 535 increases the amount that must be paid towards the funeral or burial expenses of a state law enforcement, correctional, or correctional probation officer who is killed in the line of duty from $1,000 to $10,000.
Additionally, this bill authorizes the head of a law enforcement agency to grant up to eight hours of administrative leave to a law enforcement officer so that the officer can attend the funeral service of a Florida officer who was killed in the line of duty. The bill also allows the head of a law enforcement agency to authorize travel expenses for a law enforcement officer to attend the funeral service of a fallen Florida officer.
