“Atlantic red snapper is more abundant today than anyone alive has seen and the fishery continues to grow.
Despite this success, the two-day recreational harvest season announced for 2023 is sadly the best that could be expected under current management, and additional quota cuts and restrictions are likely ahead.
We need a fundamental reevaluation of the current management approach, which clearly does not align with every real-world indicator of how healthy the red snapper population is.
The American Sportfishing Association encourages the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council, NOAA Fisheries, and the states to work toward innovative approaches to management and data collection improvements that provide reasonable harvest access for anglers while continuing to benefit the red snapper population.”
