As we approach the one-year anniversary of the Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade and 50 years of precedent, Florida House Democratic Caucus Leader Fentrice Driskell (D- Tampa) released the following statement:
“In the year since the Supreme Court overturned Roe, we’ve seen states across the country rush to take away our freedom to make our own reproductive health care decisions. Here in Florida, Ron DeSantis and the GOP legislative majority pushed through an extremist 6-week ban, outlawing abortions before many women even know they’re pregnant.
And when we hear state and national Republican voices say they want to go even further we need to believe them. If we don’t fight back they will fully outlaw abortion and push misguided contraception bans on women across the country.
We cannot allow the extremist minority to control this incredibly personal and important part of our lives. In Florida and across America, support for access remains very high because abortion is health care and health care is personal. We do not need the government making these decisions for us.
Without the protection of Roe v. Wade, we are at a critical point in history. We must fight to elect leaders who support our freedoms, and we must codify into law that this decision is between a woman and her doctor, not Tallahassee politicians. I urge everyone to get involved: find out if your elected officials support your rights, let them know that this is important, and consider signing the petition to get abortion access on the ballot in 2024. We must push back against these extremists and their assault on our rights and freedoms.”
