The U.S. Supreme Court today handed down the monumental decision that will drastically alter how universities can use race in the admission process. Florida Senator Shevrin Jones (D- Miami Gardens) released the following statement:
Yet again, the Supreme Court has shown it is an illegitimate, partisan body dead-set on making society’s inequities even worse. Affirmative action benefits all of us, not just people of color, as everyone in our schools, workplaces, and neighborhoods can learn and be enriched by experiences alongside those with perspectives that differ from their own.
For decades, affirmative action has opened up doors of opportunities for students across the country. There is no denying that the playing field is unlevel, and that for too many, hard work is not enough to get a seat at the table. Today’s SCOTUS decision reminds us all that there remains significant work ahead if we are to live up to the values of fairness and equality for all.
