Commissioner Manny Diaz, Jr. Announces July Books of the Month

Posted on July 13, 2023

Florida Commissioner of Education Manny Diaz, Jr. today announced July’s chosen books for the Commissioner’s Book of the Month, a monthly reading challenge to promote literacy and reading engagement in preK-12 schools. Each month, Commissioner Diaz highlights five recommended books – one per selected grade range.

“As we reflect on our nation’s history, I am honored to recommend books that will promote patriotism and help students further understand the founding of our great nation,” said Education Commissioner Manny Diaz, Jr. “This month’s selections celebrate American heroes, including those who gave their life to safeguard our freedoms.”

The Commissioner’s recommendations for July 2023 are:

  • PreK – Good Night America by Adam Gamble
  • Grades K-2 – You’re a Grand Old Flag by George M. Cohan
  • Grades 3-5 – The Bald Eagle by Norman Pearl
  • Grades 6-8 – George Washington, Spymaster: How the Americans Outspied the British and Won the Revolutionary War by Thomas B. Allen
  • Grades 9-12 – D-Day: The Invasion of Normandy, 1944 (The Young Readers Adaptation) by Rick Atkinson

The selections for each month can be found on the Commissioner’s Book of the Month page of the FDOE website.
