Leader Driskell’s Statement on SB 264 Lawsuit

Posted on July 18, 2023

House Democratic Caucus Leader Fentrice Driskell (D- Tampa) issued the following statement about the ongoing lawsuit against SB 264, which would restrict people of certain nationalities from buying property in large parts of Florida.

“Senate Bill 264 crosses the line from security to discrimination and should be thrown out by the courts. How can Governor DeSantis call this the ‘free state of Florida’ when he’s interfering with the rights of a community to buy a home here?

The American Dream promises that we are all equal and free, no matter who we are or where we’re from. We cannot give in to this kind of fear, hate, or bigotry.

I stand with the Asian American community, who have endured a surge of politically motivated bigotry and violence in recent years.

The Chinese people are not the Chinese government, and we must reject the unjust and un-American idea that they should be subject to a separate set of rules than the rest of us.”
