Representative Ashley Gantt Responds to the Governor’s Removal of Duly Elected Ninth Circuit State Attorney Monique Worrell

Posted on August 10, 2023

Representative Ashley V. Gantt (D-Miami), Florida House District 109, responds to the Governor’s unconstitutional removal of another duly elected public servant, State Attorney Monique Worrell.

Representative Gantt states, “The Governor is destroying the democracy everyone says they hold dear. This is the second time he has stripped away the power of the citizens of a county. His actions demonstrate the behavior of a full on dictator. This is what the destruction of a Democratic society looks like, when the needs and wants of Floridians are ignored for the constant prioritization of the Governor’s political agenda. This is a larger plan to take over the entire court system. They are implementing a plan to erase the separation of three distinct branches of government and create a one leader system, it is completely antithetical to democracy. Removing, yet another, duly elected democratic official is an intentional and unconstitutional measure of silencing voters. Gerrymandering the districts to create a situation of a supermajority created a climate ripe for the ability to do as he pleases because the Republican led legislature has abdicated its duty to Floridians for one man. I unequivocally stand with Monique Worrell and with the voters of Orange and Osceola counties who elected her and I will continue to fight for democracy.”

This move comes after a letter sent by the Speaker of the House pushing for the consolidation of Florida circuit courts. It is nothing short of an attempt to gerrymander, allowing Republicans to place voters where they want them and in the specific areas they want them to be in.
