Major Interstate 95 (I-95) at U.S. 1 Interchange
Project Ready to Start Construction in Late 2027
The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) today joined Legislative leadership to announce important updates on the Moving Florida Forward Infrastructure Initiative, including expected construction timelines for the I-95 at U.S. 1 Interchange project.
Proposed to the Legislature in January 2023, Governor Ron DeSantis’ Moving Florida Forward Infrastructure Initiative will accelerate priority infrastructure projects across the state through an investment of $4 Billion from the General Revenue Surplus starting in the 2023-2024 budget year. These projects are slated to address congestion, improve safety, ensure a resilient transportation system, enhance the supply chain and economic growth, and address future needs as the state continues to experience rapid growth.
“Within the next four years, the critical infrastructure projects that Florida’s motorists have been asking for will start to come to fruition thanks to the strong leadership of Governor DeSantis and support from the Legislature,” said FDOT Secretary Jared W. Perdue, P.E.“These projects are critical to ensuring that our state can accommodate its growing population across our roadways, and FDOT stands ready to begin this work for our communities alongside our partners.”
“Thanks to the Governor’s leadership and our partners in the Senate, we prioritized a $4 billion investment in the Moving Florida Forward initiative to help meet the state’s critical infrastructure needs,” said Speaker of the House Paul Renner. I’m confident these investments will unleash new opportunities and possibilities benefiting Floridians for decades to come.”
“Moving Florida Forward is a historic plan that is accelerating roadway projects that will transform and enhance transportation where they are most needed,” said House Appropriations Chairman Thomas Leek. “Our community has been looking forward to a safer and more efficient interchange, and we are excited it’s coming to reality.”
Interstate 95 (I-95) at U.S. 1 Interchange in Volusia County: Improvements will be made to the I-95 interchange at U.S. 1 in Ormond Beach. Approximately one-mile segment of U.S. 1 between Plantation Oaks Boulevard/ Broadway Avenue and Destination Daytona Lane will be widened from two lanes in each direction to three. This widening includes the addition of shared use paths to serve bicyclists, pedestrians, and other users. Construction starts in late 2027.
“The I-95 at U.S. 1 interchange was built in the 1960s and is one of the oldest interchanges on the interstate highway system in Florida,” said FDOT District Five Secretary John Tyler. “It has not kept pace with increasing traffic and its antiquated design has had increasing crashes and operational issues. Modernizing the interchange will improve safety and mobility for the region’s residents and I-95 travelers.”
With construction soon beginning on projects across the state, motorists are encouraged to always drive with caution and slowdown in and around work zones. Let’s get everyone, including our workers, home safely.
