Representative Angie Nixon (D-Jacksonville) issued the following statement in response to the upcoming November special session and the ongoing conflict in the Middle East:
“There is no place in the modern world for hate, particularly when it leads to the extraordinary and devastating loss of innocent civilian lives. I unequivocally condemn in the strongest terms, the attack by Hamas against the Israeli people. I am also devastated by the immense Palestinian casualties and suffering as a result, along with what they have experienced over the years. I uphold the belief that all people, including Palestinians and Israelis should have the opportunity to live healthy, prosperous and safe lives. Continuing violence in the Middle East will not lead to resolution in this multigenerational conflict. More violence will only lead to civilian suffering and the death of more innocent people.
“As human beings, we all deserve to live free from violence and oppression, regardless of our race or ethnicity. I stand for peace and the protection of civilian life. Therefore, any American involvement in arming or facilitating violence on any side must end. America has a duty to intervene for a peaceful resolution to this suffering. The killing and wounding of civilians must end with an immediate de-escalation and ceasefire along with increased humanitarian aid to alleviate as much human suffering as possible.
“And as we go into a special session that will likely discuss the conflict in the Middle East, I urge my colleagues to work harder to eliminate hate here at home because Floridians of all backgrounds, religions, and races deserve to live safely in peace.”
