Yesterday, HB 133 Professional Licensing Requirements for Barbers and Cosmetologists, filed by Representative Kevin Chambliss (D- Homestead) and prime co-sponsored by Representative Rachel Plakon (R- Lake Mary), unanimously passed the Regulatory Reform and Economic Development Subcommittee. The representatives issued the following statements in response:
“Today marks a great step forward in our fight to establish a system that allows for inmates to transform themselves into contributing members of society. By reducing the time-frame an applicant for a barbering or cosmetology license, HB 133 works to improve the economic opportunities for reformed individuals following their release from prison. Thank you to the members of the Regulatory Reform and Economic Development Subcommittee for their unanimous support this morning, and I look forward to continuing this fight,” said Representative Chambliss.
“I’m proud to work with Representative Chambliss on this important legislation. This bill will reduce recidivism and encourage redemption when appropriate. It will respect our hard-working taxpayers as well by reducing dependence on our social safety net programs,” said Representative Plakon.
Senator Linda Stewart (D- Orlando) is partnering with Representatives Chambliss and Plakon in this effort, and has filed HB 133’s companion bill in the Senate.
