FDOT, FHP Urge Safety During Thanksgiving Travel

Posted on November 17, 2023

Thanksgiving week is perennially the busiest week on Florida roadways. Each year, millions of Floridians travel for the holiday, and Orlando is always a top destination. With so many people on the road, it’s vital that drivers exercise care while behind the wheel.

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) urge drivers to make sure their vehicle is ready for the trip, buckle up, and never drive impaired — including not driving while drowsy. Holiday travelers can also check roadway conditions and view live streaming traffic cameras onFL511.com, home of FDOT’s Florida 511 traveler information system.

FDOT also provides roadside assistance to stranded motorists. Road Rangers are FDOT’s safety/service patrol who provide free, limited roadside assistance, including changing a tire or assisting with minor mechanical repairs. Road Rangers also protect motorists and crash scenes by alerting oncoming drivers of the incident. Motorists on Interstate 4 (I-4), I-75, I-95, and Central Florida’s toll roads can request a Road Ranger’s assistance by dialing *FHP (*347). While Road Rangers are available year-round, FDOT will have increased patrols during the busy holiday week.

“Florida’s goal is to eliminate fatal and serious injury crashes from our state roadways,” Loreen Bobo, P.E., FDOT District Five’s Safety Administrator, said. “Especially during the holiday season, safety is every driver’s responsibility. It begins when you make the decision to drive sober and to buckle up, and continues throughout your trip when you make smart decisions on the road. We encourage everyone to do their part to help get everyone home safely.”

Lieutenant Tara Crescenzi of FHP asks Florida’s motorists to exercise caution on and off the road. “As we gather to celebrate the joys of the holiday season, let’s carry the spirit of safety along with our festive cheer. Remember, whether you’re navigating the roads, securing your home, or enjoying time with loved ones, your safety and the welfare of others start with an individual commitment to responsible actions. So, this holiday, as we wrap our gifts with care, let’s also wrap up our travel plans with the bow of vigilance and thoughtfulness, ensuring everyone can unwrap the gift of safe and happy memories to cherish for years to come.”
