Focus on Florida’s Future Budget Reinforces Commitment to Lead the Nation in Emergency Response, Recovery and Resiliency

Posted on December 6, 2023

The Florida Division of Emergency Management (Division) today highlighted Governor Ron DeSantis’ commitment to disaster response, recovery and resiliency through the Focus on Florida’s Future Budget. The 2024-2025 proposed recommendations include record investments in supporting emergency response initiatives and streamlining recovery funding to communities impacted by disasters.

“I want to thank Governor DeSantis for his continued support of the Division’s vision to lead the nation in the field of emergency management and response,” said Division Executive Director Kevin Guthrie. “His budget recommendations reaffirm his commitment to helping Floridians recover and build more resilient communities.”

In the last year, the Division has led exemplary disaster response and recovery efforts in responding to Hurricane Idalia, continuing to assist residents as they recover from hurricanes Ian and Nicole, and assist in rescuing Floridians stranded in Israel.

Funding for the Division of Emergency Management in Governor DeSantis’ proposed budget includes:

  • $1.3 Billion in federal and state funding so that communities and the state can respond to and recover from major disasters or emergencies as well as mitigate against future disasters or emergencies.
  • $10 million for the State Non-Profit Security Grant Program to increase security and safety for nonprofit entities at high risk for violent attacks and hate crimes.
  • $8 million to support the sustainment and training of Florida’s eight Urban Search and Rescue teams. Florida’s Urban Search and Rescue teams provide invaluable support to Floridians during disasters and this funding will help maintain and replace equipment for the teams and support training activities.
  • $5.9 million to streamline the Division’s grant management system and support expedited preparedness, recovery and mitigation funding to Florida’s communities.
  • $5 million for the Illegal Alien Transport Program which facilitates the transport of unauthorized aliens to other locations outside of Florida.
