Senator Shevrin Jones (D–Miami Gardens) and Representative Kelly Skidmore (D–Boca Raton) today joined Captain Sandy Yawn from Bravo TV’s Below Deck to discuss HB 911 and the many contributions that the boating industry brings to Florida’s Blue Economy. The legislators presented mock-ups of the two license plates proposed: Boating Capital of the World and Recycle Florida.
The annual fees collected from the sale of the two new license plates in HB 911 will be distributed to the Captain Sandy Yawn Charities and Recycle Florida Today Foundation, Inc., respectively. As discussed at today’s press conference, funds from the Boating Capitol of the World plate will be used to increase public awareness of maritime employment opportunities and promote professional development and job placement in all sectors of maritime employment. Fees collected from the sale of the Recycle Florida plate will be distributed to increase public awareness about the importance of recycling, resource conservation, and environmental stewardship.
“The creation of this new license plate will recognize and strengthen the huge impact Florida’s boating industry has on the economy,” said Representative Skidmore. “Florida’s marine industry brings more than $24.6 billion into our state and more than 270,000 jobs. Strengthening Florida’s blue economy has been a long-time priority for me and this bill aids in ensuring that Florida reaps all the economic rewards that water, our most valuable resource, can provide.”
“Creating awareness through the Recycle Florida license plate will be an invaluable tool in addressing the adverse effects of climate change by supporting professional development in the fields of recycling, conservation, and sustainability and will aid the State of Florida in meeting its weight-based recycling goal of 75%,” commented Senator Jones.
