Representative Felicia Simone Robinson’s (D-Miami Gardens) legislation CS/HB 47, which provides for fair charges for citizens receiving utility services from another municipality when the utility plant is located in the customer’s municipality. This bill will require the owning municipality to charge customers residing in the housing municipality the same rates, fees, and charges as its customers within its municipal boundaries under certain circumstances. CS/HB 47 passed the House Commerce Committee unanimously last week.
“This bill is simply meant to solve an unintended consequence of current statutes surrounding municipal water and sewer utility surcharges,” said Representative Robinson. “For over 20 years, Miami Gardens residents have been burdened with a 25% surcharge for utility service from a facility that sits in their very own community. This bill is a huge step forward for correcting this unfair issue faced by constituents in my district.”
The bill has already passed unanimously in the Energy, Communications, & Cybersecurity Subcommittee and the Local Administration, Federal Affairs, & Special Districts Subcommittee. CS/HB 47 now heads to the House Floor for approval to become Florida Statute.
