This event is dedicated to honoring the 45th anniversary of Gwen Cherry’s passing, and commemorates her extraordinary life and legacy.
On February 7, 1979, the State of Florida lost a true advocate for the people, Gwendolyn Sawyer Cherry, Esquire. As a representative of the district she served, our office is proud to commemorate her life and legacy as a trailblazer in Florida’s political history. Gwendolyn Sawyer Cherry holds a distinct place in our state’s history as the first Black woman to serve as a Florida Legislator. Her tireless dedication to public service and commitment to advocating for the rights and well-being of all Floridians left an indelible mark on our legislative landscape.
Our office will also be honoring the women who took office after Gwen Cherry, such as Congresswoman Carrie Meek and her family, Congresswoman Frederica Wilson, School Board member Dr. Dorothy Bendross-Mindigal, and Representative Cynthia Stafford.
A tribute from the Miami-Dade County Board of County Commissioners will be presented commemorating February 7, 2024 a day of remembrance in Miami-Dade for the late Gwendolyn Sawyer Cherry.
