The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is committed to improving pedestrian safety along Florida’s roadways, including the busy corridor of State Road (S.R.) A1A in Ormond Beach. As part of this continued effort, the FDOT invites local residents and visitors to a free informational “Walk and Talk” event to highlight the recent safety enhancements along S.R. A1A from south of Milsap Road to Granada Boulevard (S.R. 40).
Since 2019, there have been six pedestrian-related crashes along this stretch of S.R. A1A. This interactive event offers the community an opportunity to learn and experience firsthand the benefits and importance of the newly installed safety features.
Date: Wednesday, March 27
Time: 9 – 11 a.m.; guided walk will begin at 9:15 a.m.
Starting Location: Andy Romano Beachfront Park
839 S. Atlantic Ave.
Ormond Beach, FL 32176
During the event, a project team member will lead participants on a voluntary walk along the sidewalk as they learn about the advantages of the recent pedestrian safety improvements. Attendees will be joined by FDOT staff, Ormond Beach Police Department officers, local elected officials, and other partners. This educational journey will cover approximately 1.4 miles, in total, in which the group will walk along the sidewalk and utilize new mid-block crossings throughout the corridor, including at the Rockefeller Drive intersection, where they will learn how to use a newly constructed Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon (PHB) before returning to Andy Romano Park.
FDOT representatives will be available at Andy Romano Park throughout the course of the event to answer questions, hand out informational safety materials, and provide detailed information about the project. Water will be provided, and casual attire is encouraged for those participating in the guided walk. Make sure to wear your most comfortable walking shoes!
In addition to the new PHB-equipped crosswalk at Rockefeller Drive, this $4.1 million pedestrian safety project lowered the speed limit from 35 mph to 30 mph along this segment of S.R. A1A and constructed seven new mid-block crossings with Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs) at the following intersections: Milsap Road, Benjamin Drive, River Beach Drive, Arlington Way, Ormond Parkway, Osceola Avenue, and Bosarvey Drive. Notably, the crossings near Milsap Road and Bosarvey Drive are slightly elevated, aligning with the sidewalk to increase pedestrian visibility to motorists and promote slower traffic speeds. This project also installed raised medians and resurfaced S.R. A1A from south of Milsap Road to Granada Boulevard to extend the life of the roadway.
