Florida House Democrats’ Inaugural Hearing Reveals Detrimental Impact of Harmful Policy Proposals on Floridians

TAMPA, Fla. – Yesterday, Florida House Democrats hosted the inaugural “Freedom to Be Heard” summer field hearing in the Tampa Bay region. This hearing provided an opportunity for legislators to hear directly from Floridians who were shut out from the legislative process and were unable to voice their concerns during the 2024 Legislative Session. During the hearing, Floridians discussed how Republican efforts to prioritize culture wars were not only harmful for our state, but also distract lawmakers from addressing critical issues impacting Florida’s families, including the skyrocketing housing and property insurance costs, safe access to abortions, and more.

This official Caucus hearing followed a similar format to legislative committee meetings. It was presided by Leader Fentrice Driskell (D-Tampa) and was joined by Democratic Tampa Bay region Representatives Dianne Hart (D-Tampa), Lindsay Cross (D-St. Petersburg), Michele K. Rayner (D-St. Petersburg), and Susan L. Valdés (D-Tampa). Tampa Bay region community members, including teachers, students, parents, activists, and business leaders all shared their personal stories and concerns.

Those who were unable to attend the live hearing can replay it via The Florida Channel at https://thefloridachannel.org/videos/7-22-24-house-democratic-caucus-summer-field-hearing/.

FLORIDA DEMOCRATS REACT TO ‘FLORIDA NIGHT’ AT THE RNC CONVENTION

Tallahassee, FL — The Republican National Convention is now underway and on the second night, Florida Republicans, including Senators Scott and Rubio and Governor DeSantis, took center stage. In response, the Florida Democratic Party released the following statement:

“This is a clown show,” said Florida Democratic Party Chair Nikki Fried. “It was ‘Florida Night’ at the RNC and Republicans were tripping over themselves to line up behind Donald Trump.

“On night two, Florida Republicans took center stage as the circus continued at the Republican National Convention. Rick Scott reappeared after being MIA for seven days, Rubio limped on stage after being rejected as Trump’s running mate and DeSantis recycled old talking points from his failed presidential campaign.

“The Republican Party can preach ‘unity’ all night long but the only thing they are united on is sending America backwards. In primetime, Americans got a preview of what Trump’s Project 2025 looks like. These dangerous and extreme policies are the backbone of the modern Republican Party and represent a vision for America that threatens to take us back to a time when we had fewer rights.

“In November, Floridians have a clear choice to make: Elect a Biden-Harris ticket that will lead to truly unite the country or a Trump-Vance ticket focused on advancing an extreme and out-of-touch agenda.”

FLORIDA DEMOCRATS RESPOND TO TRUMP’S CHOICE OF J.D. VANCE FOR RUNNING MATE

Tallahassee, FL — Today, Donald Trump announced that J.D. Vance would serve as running mate for his presidential campaign.

Vance, a U.S. Senator from Ohio, is best known for his 2016 memoir, Hillbilly Elegy, which exploited the stories of people living in rural Appalachia and framed poverty as a moral failing.

In response, the Florida Democratic Party has issued the following statement:

“J.D. Vance built his career around insulting rural Americans and the working class, and choosing him as a running mate shows how out-of-touch Trump and the Republican Party are with Americans,” said FDP Chair Nikki Fried.

“While Republicans advance their extreme agenda through Project 2025, Florida Democrats are talking to voters from Pensacola to Key West about how Democrats are working to make their lives better — from solving our affordability crisis to holding our government accountable to the people. From now until election day, we’ll illustrate how damaging a Trump–Vance presidency would be and why we have to re-elect Joe Biden and Kamala Harris this November.”

Representative Dotie Joseph Joins Legislators from Around the Country to Examine Sustainable Aquaculture and Supporting Small Seafood Businesses

MIAMI – House Democratic Leader Pro Tempore Dotie Joseph (D-Miami) will join a delegation of 25 state legislators, Tribal leaders, fishermen, and international advocates in Seattle, Washington this weekend for a hands-on workshop on the principles and policies of sustainable aquaculture and working waterfronts. The meeting is hosted by State Innovation Exchange (SiX), a nonpartisan organization and strategy center that supports state legislators in advancing bold public policy solutions, and Don’t Cage Our Oceans (DCO2), a national coalition and nonprofit focused on preventing the expansion of industrial aquaculture and supporting local fishing communities.

“Florida is the only continental state largely surrounded by large bodies of water and has extensive shallow coral reef formations near its coasts. Florida’s ‘salt life’ culture and overall economy largely depends on the health of our ocean ecosystem,” said Representative Joseph. “I look forward to joining experts and other legislators from around the country to learn about best practices to support sustainable aquaculture, independent fisheries, and working waterfronts that benefit Florida’s economy without harming workers, small business owners, or the environment.”

“Local fishing economies are the lifeblood of coastal communities, providing not only a source of livelihood and sustenance, but also a connection to cultural heritage and sustainable practices,” stated Kendra Kimbirauskas, Senior Director of the SiX Agriculture and Food Systems program. “This workshop seeks to equip state legislators with essential knowledge and policy instruments to support sustainable practices in our ocean ecosystems and take on corporate power-grabs by global private equity firms determined to exploit our ocean resources.”

Andrianna Natsoulas, Campaign Director of Don’t Cage Our Oceans, said, “Around the country, action must be taken to preserve our fishing communities, protect our environment, and uplift regenerative aquaculture. Our coalition is grateful for the state policymakers’ interest in this issue and their commitment to working waterfronts and values-based seafood systems. Both community-based fishermen and aquaculture practitioners need support at the state level.”

STATEMENT: Central Florida Legislators Support Strengthening Local Agriculture in Puerto Rico

Orlando, FL – A group of Central Florida legislators, alongside the Puerto Rican Cultural Center, have united to express their strong support for strengthening local agriculture in Puerto Rico. In a letter, they emphasize the importance of investing in the local agricultural economy and the vital role that local farming plays in the economic and social well-being of the island of Puerto Rico. Florida is home to a 1.2 million strong Puerto Rican Diaspora. As we saw after the devastating effects of Hurricanes Irma and Maria, what happens on the island has a direct impact in Florida and vice versa. Puerto Rican ports were closed for 3 weeks after Maria hit in 2017. This limited the food supply as the island imports more than 85 percent of the food it consumes.

Recognizing the challenges that Puerto Rico’s agricultural sector faces, including the impacts of climate change, natural disasters, and economic pressures, the legislators highlighted the need for increased investment and resources to help local farmers thrive. Their collective action underscores the shared commitment to fostering a self-sufficient agricultural community in Puerto Rico.

FLORIDA DEMOCRATS WELCOME FIRST LADY JILL BIDEN TO FLORIDA

Miami, FL — Today, First Lady Jill Biden is visiting Florida to launch Veterans and Military Families for Biden-Harris, a national organizing program for Biden-Harris 2024. In response, the Florida Democratic Party has issued the following statement:

“The Florida Democratic Party is proud to welcome the First Lady to Florida today,” said FDP Chair Nikki Fried. “As a state with 21 military bases and nearly 67,000 military spouses and families, Florida is the right place to launch Veterans and Military Families for Biden-Harris.

“The Biden-Harris Administration has done so much work to support and protect our veterans and military families — from expanding VA eligibility to reducing homelessness and suicides — while Donald Trump has called fallen troops ‘suckers’ and ‘losers and threatened to rip away their hard earned benefits to support his tax cuts. We’re grateful to have Dr. Biden here to draw attention to that contrast today.

ICYMI: Republican-led States (like Florida) are Blocking Summer Food Benefits for Hungry Families

FDP Chair Nikki Fried declares it a “Cruel Summer” for Florida’s kids

Tallahassee, FL — Last week, USA TODAY reported that Florida and 11 other Republican-led states chose to opt out of the Summer EBT program, a federal initiative to provide families who receive free or reduced school lunches an EBT credit for the summer months. 9.5 million children are affected in states that opted out, including 2.2 million children in Florida, which rejected $250 million in federal funding.

In a tweet, FDP Chair Nikki Fried called the move a “Cruel Summer” and said that Ron DeSantis “only protects our kids when it fits his narrative.”

  • The governors of a dozen states – Alabama, Alaska, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Mississippi, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Utah and Wyoming – opted out of the program, leaving about 9.5 million students without the aid this summer, according to the United States Department of Agriculture. All of these states are led by Republicans.99

  • White House leaders slammed state officials, including Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who refused to opt in and help combat hunger for parents who can’t afford to feed themselves or their children.

  • “It is $250 million that is left on the table. … It costs Floridians nothing,” said White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre to Spectrum News.

  • “It is truly, truly shameful, that they are not opting into these programs.” Jean-Pierre said. “We’re talking about making sure that children in low-income families … are getting the summer lunches, right? And one of the things that we learned during this pandemic is food insecurity. How terrible that was to our children. And so we need to make sure that we’re taking care of our kids.”

  • …all of Florida’s Democrats in Congress sent a letter to DeSantis, urging him to apply to the program in time for the Jan. 1 deadline. In response to the state’s decision to reject the money, Democratic Congresswoman Kathy Castor said in a statement: “Governor DeSantis is putting Florida families at a disadvantage yet again due to his extreme politics.”

  • “It doesn’t seem it would be that heavy of a lift for the state to put this out, especially considering the fact that … so many children are going hungry, grocery costs are still on the increase in Florida and the amount of money that would come into the state,” [Cindy] Huddleston said.

  • Florida director of No Kid Hungry, Sky Beard, called the state’s most recent decision “incredibly disappointing.” “More than three-quarters of Floridians reported it was harder to buy food this year than last, due to the increasing costs of food and other essentials,” she wrote in a statement.

Representative Hunschofsky’s Practice of Chiropractic Medicine Bill is Signed into Law

PARKLAND, Fla. – This week, House Bill 1063 – Chiropractic Medicine by Representative Christine Hunschofsky (D-Parkland) was signed into law by the Governor.

This new law allows physicians certified and trained in dry needling to perform these treatments. Dry needling, a treatment for musculoskeletal pain and movement issues, involves inserting a thin needle into trigger points to stimulate muscles. This law will also help eliminate any confusion for patients and insurance companies regarding scope of chiropractic care.

Additionally, HB 1063 streamlines the licensure process for graduates of international chiropractic institutions by allowing the Department of Health to accept equivalency reports and credential evaluation reports from approved organizations. This change will help increase the number of qualified healthcare providers in the state, by saving them significant time and costs.

“This law ensures that more highly skilled chiropractors can practice in our state,” said Representative Hunschofsky. “At the same time, we are providing patients with more treatment options and eliminating any ambiguity in what chiropractic care can offer.”

Representative Bruce Antone Says the Florida Museum of Black History Task Force was a Failure

ORLANDO, Fla. – Representative Bruce Antone (D-Orlando) sent a lengthy letter to the members of the Florida Museum of Black History Task Force. The letter discusses his concerns with the manner and process by which the Task Force conducted its business, and the proposed recommendations, that may be included in the Florida Museum of Black History Task Force Final Report. The final report, which will be sent to the Governor, and the Florida Legislature, will include recommendations regarding the design, construction and operation of a Black History Museum in Florida. Representative Antone respectfully asked the Task Force to not make any recommendations regarding the Florida Museum of Black History or a location for the proposed museum.

Representative Antone stated, “Senator Bobby Powell and myself passed CS/CS/HB 1441, with the intent of the Florida Museum of Black History Task Force developing design and construction plans to build a Very Large, World-Class Florida Museum of Black History. The proposed Florida Museum of Black History was extremely important to the State of Florida, Black Americans and Caribbean Immigrants in Florida, and was intended to showcase the contributions Black People and Caribbean Immigrants have made to the history of Florida and the United States. The Task Force met nine times and did not complete any of the tasks required by the legislation (i.e. CS/CS/HB 1441), which created the Task Force. Therefore, I respectfully ask the Florida Museum of Black History Task Force to not make any recommendations to the Governor, and the Florida Legislature.”

The bill (i.e. CS/CS/HB 1441 [2023]) required the task force to develop:

  1. Plans for the location, design, and construction of the museum.
  2. Recommendations for the operation and administration of the museum.
  3. A marketing plan to promote the museum.
  4. A transition plan for the museum to become financially self-sufficient.
  5. Recommendations for archival and artifact acquisition, preservation, and research; exhibits; and educational materials.”

“Finally, the Florida Museum of Black History Task Force should quietly end and disband tomorrow (i.e. Friday June 28th ) without making any recommendations. People across the State of Florida and the United States, especially Black People and Caribbean Immigrants, were excitedly watching the meetings of the Florida Museum of Black History Task Force with high hopes and anticipation that Florida would build a Large World Class Black History Museum. The Task Force failed to complete the tasks required by the legislation which created the Task Force,” added Representative Antone.
