Secretary of State Ken Detzner today announced that the Florida Department of State Cultural Arts and Folk Heritage Awards will take place in the Capitol’s 22nd Floor Observation Deck on January 24, 2018 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. The ceremony will include a presentation of the Florida Folklife Program’s Folk Heritage Awards, the Division of Cultural Affairs’ Diversity and Inclusion Awards, and the induction of recording artists The Bellamy Brothers and visual artist Purvis Young into the Florida Artists Hall of Fame.
“From music to art to dance and everything in between, these individuals and organizations represent such a broad spectrum of our state’s rich and diverse arts and culture community,” said Secretary of State Ken Detzner. “Their work has and continues to inspire and bring people together and it is an honor to recognize the award winners for their role in elevating arts and culture in Florida.”
Doors will open at 5:00 p.m. for a reception beginning at 6:00 p.m., with the Awards Ceremony to begin at 7:00 p.m.

Established by the Florida Legislature in 1986, the Florida Artists Hall of Fame recognizes persons, living or deceased, who have made significant contributions to the arts in Florida either as performing or practicing artists in their disciplines. About The Division of Historical Resources
The Florida Department of State’s Division of Historical Resources (DHR) is responsible for preserving and promoting Florida’s historical, archaeological, and folk culture resources. The Division Director’s office oversees a grants-in-aid program to help preserve and maintain Florida’s historic buildings and archaeological sites; coordinates outreach programs such as the State Historic Markers program and the Florida Folklife program which identifies and promotes the state’s traditional culture. DHR directs historic preservation efforts throughout the state in cooperation with state and federal agencies, local governments, private organizations, and individuals. The Division director serves as the State Historic Preservation Officer, acting as the liaison with the national historic preservation program conducted by the National Park Service. Fifteen Flagler College students recently returned from the nationally-recognized Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF) in Statesboro, Ga., where they competed regionally in categories ranging from design and technical theatre to performance, stage management and dramaturgy.
One of the college’s productions, “The Maids,” written by Jean Genet and translated by Andrew Upton and Benedict Andrews, was selected as one of six in the region to be showcased. In addition, the Theatre Arts Department received a departmental award, Associate Professor Paul Denayer and Resident Costume Designer Elaina Wahl-Temple won design awards and Guest Director Joe Kemper received a directing award. Student Terrence Christopher Scott was passed from the initial Irene Ryan Acting Competition to the semi-finals on the second day. His acting partner was Kaitlyn Mollohan. Students Mykala Bazzell, Megan Williams and Rylee Kuberra presented a Devised Theatre piece.
Other students in attendance included: Taylor Anderson, Dustin Delgross, Elijah Eyerly, Sarah (Sissy) Hofaker, Emily Gilmer, Corlina Kiernan, Brian Matthews, Amelia Temple, Shelby Walker and Rebecca Woods.
KCACTF, which hosts the Irene Ryan acting competition, is comprised of a network of more than 600 schools throughout the country. Theater departments and student artists showcase their work and receive outside assessment by KCACTF respondents. Of the eight regions nationally, Flagler College is a part of Region IV. Students are able to compete and present nationally alongside the best theatre students from around the South. This year’s competition, held at Georgia Southern University, took place Feb. 8 to 11.
Secretary of State Ken Detzner today announced the 2017 Florida Folk Heritage Award recipients. The 2017 awardees are David Peñaflor and Marilia Carrasquillo of Ocoee, Folk Advocates of Latin American culture; Haiqiong Deng of Tallahassee, traditional Chinese musician; Pastor William Emerson of Tarpon Springs, performing artist and composer of Rhythm and Blues and sacred music; and Willie Green of McIntosh, blues artist.
“The contributions of these gifted individuals illustrate the extraordinary depth and diversity of Florida’s traditional culture,” said Secretary Detzner. “They are recognized for their remarkable achievements and their dedicated role in preserving Florida’s folk cultural resources.”
The Florida Department of State presents Florida Folk Heritage Awards annually to citizens who have made long-standing contributions to Florida’s cultural heritage by perpetuating community traditions. Like the National Heritage Awards, the Florida Folk Heritage Awards honor the state’s most influential tradition bearers for excellence, significance, and authenticity.
