First Lady Ann Scott Awards K-12 Students in the Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida! Find Yourself in a Book Contest
First Lady Ann Scott today recognized the winners of the Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida! Find Yourself in a Book Contest. First Lady Scott was joined by K-12 Public Schools Chancellor Hershel Lyons and Lottery Secretary Jim Poppell. The award ceremony concludes the week-long celebration of reading and literacy in Florida’s schools.
First Lady Ann Scott said, “I am extremely proud of these students for showcasing their creativity and promoting the value of literacy. It is clear that they are on a path to success, and I am honored to recognize them for their hard work. I urge all Florida students to keep celebrating literacy and make reading a part of their daily routine.”
K-12 Public Schools Chancellor Hershel Lyons said, “Congratulations to all of the students that participated in the Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida! Find Yourself in a Book Contests. Literacy is a critical skill that is the building block for lifelong learning, and I am extremely proud of these students for taking the initiative to participate in the contest and sharing the importance of reading with their peers.
“On behalf of the Florida Lottery, congratulations to all of the students who participated in this year’s Celebrate Literacy Week contest,” said Secretary Jim Poppell. “We are proud to once again join First Lady Ann Scott and the Department of Education in support of the integral role literacy plays in the success of Florida’s students and schools.”

Third Place: Everglades Elementary, Okeechobee County – “If You Give a School an Ag Teacher”
MIDDLE SCHOOLS
First Place: Swift Creek Middle School, Leon County – “Wonder”
Second Place: Varsity Lakes Middle School, Lee County – “Life as Auggie”
Third Place: King Middle School, Santa Rosa County – “Wonder”
HIGH SCHOOLS
First Place: Donald E. Woods Opportunity Center, Polk County – “The Frankenstein in Me”
Second Place: Paxon School of Advanced Studies, Duval County – “The Ables”
Third Place: Miami Southridge Senior High School, Dade County – “The Tower of Discovery”
To compete in the contest, schools submitted student created books, character videos or movie trailers to illustrate the theme or central message from a book. The prizes were sponsored by the Florida Education Foundation: $1,000 for first place, $500 for second place, and $250 for third place. The winning projects will be featured on the Just Read, Florida! website and the Department of Education’s social media pages. First Lady Ann Scott Kicks off 10th Annual Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida! in St. Johns County
First Lady Ann Scott today kicked off 2018 Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida! at Ponte Vedra High School in St. Johns County. The First Lady was joined by St. Johns County Superintendent Tim Forson, Department of Education and Florida Lottery officials, and Ponte Vedra High School students and staff. The 10th annual theme is “Find Yourself in a Book.”
First Lady Ann Scott said, “This is my eighth Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida!, and I am thrilled for the opportunity to spend time with hundreds of Florida students and their outstanding teachers and principals throughout the week. I look forward to this event every year because it draws attention to the invaluable role of reading and literacy in every facet of our lives.”
Commissioner of Education Pam Stewart said, “In order for students to reach their full potential, they must continually hone essential reading and literacy skills. First Lady Ann Scott’s passion for literacy motivates students to love reading as much as she does, and I am so appreciative of her support of Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida!”
Following the kick-off event, First Lady Ann Scott will visit the following schools on her literacy tour:

Over the summer months, she partners with the Departments of Education and Environmental Protection to encourage students to remain focused on reading all year.
Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida! is a week-long celebration each January designed to raise awareness about the importance of literacy and to inspire Florida’s students and families to make reading a part of their daily routines. First Lady Ann Scott said, “Congratulations to all of the contest winners! It is never too early for children to start contributing to their communities, and it is evident that these students put a great deal of time and effort into their projects. I am honored to recognize them for their hard work, and I encourage them and all students in Florida to continue reading and helping others develop a deeper appreciation for literacy.”

First Lady Ann Scott kicks off Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida! at Ft. Lauderdale High School
First Lady Ann Scott kicked off 2017 Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida! today at Fort Lauderdale High School with Florida’s 2017 Teacher of the Year, Department of Education and Florida Lottery officials, author and prize-winning Novelist Brad Meltzer and students from neighboring schools. The ninth annual event focuses on the theme, “Literacy Changes Our World.”
First Lady Ann Scott said, “CELEBRATE LITERACY WEEK, FLORIDA! is one of my favorite events because it brings together Florida students of many ages to recognize the invaluable role that literacy plays in every aspect of our lives. I was impressed by Broward County’s talented students and their participation in today’s activities while we kicked off Celebrate Literary Week, Florida! I’m very excited to share my passion for reading as I travel to schools throughout the state.”
Following the kick-off event, First Lady Ann Scott will visit seven schools on her literacy tour:
