New grant will strengthen paths to industrial management degree

Posted on May 10, 2018

A new $10,000 grant will help Daytona State College design a system that recognizes work-based experience and non-traditional business and industry certifications for students to pursue an associate of science degree in Industrial Management Technology (IMT). The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) awarded DSC the grant to work with local industry to develop pathways for employee advancement through education, which mutually benefits employers.

Daytona State was one of 25 institutions to be awarded the grant out of 374 invited to apply. It is being funded through the SACSCOC by the Lumina Foundation for Education.

“We fuel the talent pipeline when we create opportunities, introduce clear and well-articulated pathway options and guide informed choices,” said Dr. Sherryl Weems, associate vice president of DSC’s College of Workforce, Continuing and Adult Education. “This initiative supports our faculty in defining curriculum in Industrial Management Technology that connects credentials and experiences with degree pathways. Students will emerge better prepared and guided toward informed academic and career choices, thus fueling the talent pipeline for our region.”

According to SACSCOC President Dr. Belle S. Wheelan, more than 20 percent of U.S. adults have completed a work-experience program that does not necessarily result in an academic credential, such as apprenticeships, co-ops, clerkships, residencies or clinical experiences. A similar proportion have a no-degree credential awarded by a government agency, professional association or certifying board.

The grant will allow DSC faculty to develop new rubrics to evaluate, integrate and align such credentials and work experiences so they can be converted into academic credits leading to the Industrial Management Technology degree. The IMT program gives graduates of certificate and registered apprenticeship programs additional technical and supervisory skills, as well as enhanced general education skills needed for success in entry-level management positions.

The program’s curriculum will be revised to reflect the expansion of regional workforce needs in manufacturing, construction and entrepreneurial fields, as well as address the growing demand for managers and supervisors in all industry sectors. DSC will prepare well-defined career-pathway maps articulating multiple entry and exit points, as well as certificates and other stackable credentials.

DSC utilizes the Assessment of Prior Learning Experience (APLE) portfolio evaluation to establish proof of successful achievement of required learning outcomes via documented work experience.

DSC to honor graduates at 58th commencement

Posted on May 2, 2018

More than 3,400 students will join the ranks of Daytona State College alumni during commencement ceremonies on Monday, May 14, at the Ocean Center, 101 N. Atlantic Ave., Daytona Beach.

In keeping with tradition, DSC’s 58thcommencement will take place in two parts; however, ceremonies have been moved to earlier in the day to allow graduates more time to celebrate their accomplishments with family and friends. The first ceremony will begin at 10:30 a.m. for associate of science, certificate and adult education candidates. The second ceremony will begin at 2 p.m. for all bachelor’s and associate of arts degree candidates.

DSC’s commencement exercises will honor over 400 bachelor’s degree recipients. Among them are 239 graduates of Daytona State’s Bachelor of Applied Science in Supervision and Management degree, which the college began offering over a decade ago, and 80 graduates of the college’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing, which DSC launched in 2014. The college offers 11 baccalaureate degrees in business, nursing, education, engineering and information technology, and has conferred nearly 3,500 bachelor’s degrees since it transitioned in 2006 from a community college to a four-year-degree-granting state college.

Many of Daytona State’s baccalaureate recipients are working parents or have responsibilities that prohibit them from commuting long distances to go to class. Many went back to school to improve their chances of promotion to higher positions. Some chose Daytona State to prepare for change in their careers. Others weighed the substantial cost savings gained by choosing a bachelor’s degree from DSC.

The Class of 2018 also features over 1,500 associate of arts graduates. Many will continue their studies in a DSC baccalaureate degree program or smoothly transition as juniors to the University of Central Florida through DSC’s Direct Connect to UCF partnership, or to other universities.

Over 600 students will have earned their associate of science or associate of applied science degree, while another 800-plus will have taken the first step on their educational and career pathway by earning a certificate credential.

This year, over 2,000 are graduating with honors, including 539 with high honors, and 49 have been inducted into the international honor society Phi Theta Kappa, based on their leadership skills, scholarship and community service. An additional 24 graduates were inducted this year into Sigma Beta Delta, the highest international recognition a business student can receive at a college or university. Sixty Associate Degree Nursing graduates this year were inducted into the Alpha Delta Nu national honor society, and 25 students were inducted into the Kappa Delta Pi international honor society for education graduates. Fifteen students were inducted into the Daytona State College Hall of Fame, the highest honor that faculty can bestow upon a student.

More than 200 veterans earned their academic credentials this year.

And, 208 graduates are earning their associate of arts degree, associate of science or program certificate days before they receive their high school diploma through Daytona State’s popular dual enrollment program, which provides opportunity for high school students to earn college credits free of charge and get a head start on their college education.

Nearly 350 grads will have earned their adult high school diploma or GED as part of the Class of 2018.

Since its founding in 1957 as Florida’s first comprehensive community college, Daytona State has awarded over 100,000 degrees and certificates.

DSC offers assistance to students from Puerto Rico affected by Hurricane Maria

Posted on September 28, 2017

Daytona State College is offering students from Puerto Rico whose families are recovering from Hurricane Maria in-state tuition for the academic year. This initiative is in response to Gov. Rick Scott’s call for Florida’s colleges and universities to provide tuition assistance to the students.
“Many Volusia and Flagler County residents know well the devastation wrought by hurricanes,” said DSC President Tom LoBasso. “While we, too, are still recovering from the effects of hurricanes Matthew and Irma, we are fortunate that our area did not receive the kind of direct hit from these storms that Puerto Rico did with Maria and the absolute destruction it left in its wake. We hope that adjusting the tuition for students from Puerto Rico will help mitigate their losses and inconvenience, and allow them to pursue or continue their programs of study.”
As an institution that serves primarily local and in-state students, DSC records show only a handful who list their permanent residence in Puerto Rico, said Dick Pastor, vice president of enrollment services.
The college also is assisting Florida students affected by Hurricane Irma. Over two dozen in-state students sustained damage or were displaced from their homes due to the storm, according to Vice President of Student Development Keith Kennedy. “We’ve been reaching out to these students as well,” he said. “Faculty are offering them grace periods for turning in assignments and referring the students to us. Additionally, our Center for Women and Men is providing books, uniforms, vouchers for laundry services, everything that can be done for each student based on his or her individual needs or circumstances.”
For assistance with the in-state tuition offer, DSC students and future students whose permanent residence is in Puerto Rico should contact Isabel Candelas at (386) 506-3062 or [email protected].
Local students impacted by Irma can contact Kennedy at (386) 506-3562 or [email protected].

State, Federal Disaster Loan Programs Activated to Aid Businesses Impacted by Hurricane Irma

Recommended First Step: Businesses to Complete Disaster Assessment

Florida businesses impacted by Hurricane Irma may now apply for various state and federal disaster loan programs. As a principal responder in the state’s Emergency Support Function for Business and Industry, the Florida SBDC stands ready to assist businesses with disaster loan applications and with other post-disaster challenges.

State Assistance

Gov. Rick Scott activated the Florida Small Business Emergency Bridge Loan Program to provide short-term, interest-free loans to businesses damaged by the storm.

Florida Small Business Emergency Bridge Loan Program

Administered by the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO) in partnership with the Florida SBDC Network and Florida First Capital Finance Corporation (FFCFC), the Florida Small Business Emergency Bridge Loan helps businesses bridge the gap between the time damage is incurred and when a business secures other financial resources, including payment of insurance claims or longer-term Small Business Administration loans. Up to $10 million has been allocated for the program.

Under the program, eligible small businesses in all 67 Florida counties with two to 100 employees may apply for short-term, interest-free loans for $1,000 to $25,000 for 90- or 180-day terms. To be eligible, a business must have been established prior to Sept. 4, 2017, and demonstrate economic injury or physical damage as a result of Hurricane Irma.

To Apply for a Bridge Loan

Visit www.floridadisasterloan.org for more information and to apply for the Florida Emergency Bridge Loan program. The deadline to apply is Oct. 31, 2017.

Business Damage Assessment Survey

DEO is assessing the damage caused by the storm. Small businesses that have incurred losses due to Hurricane Irma are asked to complete a Business Damage Assessment Survey. The survey will help the State Emergency Response Team determine the needs and level of assistance for impacted businesses. To take the survey, please visit www.flvbeoc.org.

Federal Assistance

Following President Trump’s major disaster declaration, impacted businesses may now apply for low-interest loans through the U.S. Small Business Administration.

Business Physical Disaster Loan Program

Business Physical Disaster Loans are intended to help repair or replace disaster-damaged property. Businesses and nonprofit organizations may apply for up to $2 million to repair or replace property, including real estate, equipment, inventory, machinery and other business assets.

Economic Injury Disaster Loan Program

Businesses in qualifying adjacent counties may apply for up to $2 million for working capital through the SBA Economic Injury Disaster Loan program. The Economic Injury Disaster Loan program provides working capital loans to help small businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, small businesses engaged in aquaculture, and to help most private, nonprofit organizations meet financial obligations and operating expenses through the disaster recovery period.

Interest rates are as low as 3.305 percent for businesses and 2.5 percent for nonprofit organizations. The SBA customizes loan amounts and terms up to a maximum of 30 years for each applicant.

Applicants may also be eligible for a loan amount increase up to 20 percent of their physical damages to protect property from future damage, including adding a safe room or storm shelter.

To Apply for Physical and Economic Injury Loans

DSC Florida Symposium to focus on Sunshine State ethos

Posted on September 18, 2017

Some of Florida’s best writers, researchers and artists will come together on Friday, Oct. 20, to examine the Sunshine State’s uniquely blended historical, artistic and cultural milieu during what promises to be an engaging and informative dialogue hosted by Daytona State College. Florida: The State of the Humanities. . .  A Symposium, to be held in conjunction with Daytona State’s annual Homecoming festivities, will take place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Hosseini Center on the college’s Daytona Beach Campus, 1200 W. International Speedway Blvd. Admission is free and open to the public; however, registration is encouraged.
Symposium director, author and DSC photography professor Gary Monroe said the event’s presenting writers and artists will bring insightful perspectives about how Florida’s often quirky past is inextricably connected to its present.
“Florida has long been a place to invent and reinvent one’s self,” he said. “Whether scripted or visually documented, Florida’s narratives were built upon dreams and schemes. The humanities of our state deserve our attention. They convey the stories of our past and present; indeed, they can mold our future.”
Among the state’s leading humanities scholars slated to present are:

  • Steven Seibert, executive director of the Florida Humanities Council, who will speak about Humanities and the Workplace.
  • Rick Kilby, author of Finding the Fountain of Youth: Ponce de Leon and Florida’s Magical Waters, whose research yields refreshing insights into the myth and reality of Florida’s natural springs past and present.
  • Dr. Ben Brotemarkle, executive director of the Florida Historical Society, who will offer the Complete History of Florida (in less than an hour!).
  • Jean Ellen Wilson, a Ft. Pierce-based historian and author, who will share the story of Estes Wright, an unsung Florida civil rights pioneer whose 1930s Jim Crow-era murder was covered up for decades.
  • Seth Bramson, better known as “Mr. FEC,” who is the only person in the country to bear the official title of company historian with an American railroad – the Florida East Coast Railway. His book, Speedway to Sunshine, is the official history of the company. Bramson also teaches at Barry University, Florida International University and Nova Southeastern University.
  • Cathy Salustri, arts and entertainment editor of Creative Loafing Tampa and author of 2016’s Backroads of Paradise: A Journey to Rediscover Old Florida. Her presentation will focus on how President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s Works Progress Administration (WPA) efforts helped shape the state’s history. Her book takes readers on a nostalgic tour of what has become Florida’s post-Interstate backroads and scenic routes, historic sites, natural wonders and notable man-made attractions – comparing the past views with the present landscape and commenting on the changes along the way.
  • John Moran, co-director of the Springs Eternal Project, an exhibition that chronicles the decline of Florida’s springs due to pollution, excessive groundwater pumping and political neglect. Moran is among Florida’s leading conservation photographers, and has become a major voice in the fair use of our natural resources.
  • James Pearson, director of Daytona State’s Southeast Museum of Photography, will speak about the museum’s rise to national prominence and its place as a local cultural and educational stalwart of photographic excellence.

An exhibition of Florida Highwaymen paintings also will be displayed throughout the symposium, courtesy of Lisa Stone Arts. Additionally, attendees are welcome to view an exhibit by artist-photographer Carlos Betancourt in the Southeast Museum of Photography, which is housed in the Hosseini Center.
Volusia and Flagler public school teachers attending the symposium will be eligible for service credits. For details on how to register, call (386) 506-3837 or email [email protected].
