Florida Council for Safe Communities leader calls for impact of violent video games to be addressed

Posted on February 21, 2018

John Giotis, Chairman Emeritus of the Florida Council for Safe Communities, today released the following statement about the response to the Parkland school shooting:

“As the families affected by last week’s unspeakably tragic school shooting bury their loved ones and continue to grieve, we must figure out a way to come together to keep this from happening again. As an educator and a child advocate, my hope is that we find the correct response going forward, not a knee-jerk reaction

“Whether new gun legislation is passed or not—and that will certainly be looked at—we should realize the limits of those laws. For example, the Columbine shooting occurred five years after President Clinton successfully pushed an assault weapons ban. We must also discuss the impact of violent video games on our youth. In a 2015 report, the American Psychological Association stated that “research demonstrates a consistent relation between violent video game use and heightened aggressive behavior.” Many of the killers involved in similar shootings in recent years were avid violent video game players, including Seung-Hi Cho of Virginia Tech; Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris of Columbine; Adam Lanza of Newtown; and the most recent murderer, Nikolas Cruz of Parkland.

“Like with many of the most vexing problems in our culture, we should look at every aspect of this life-or-death issue and be willing to take an all-of-the-above approach to meaningful and effective changes. I continue to pray for Parkland, and I hope that out of this latest senseless tragedy we create sound public policy that actually addresses the root-causes of school shootings.”

Florida Council for Safe Communities Applauds Veto of SB 106

Posted on May 25, 2017

John Giotis, Chairman of the Florida Council for Safe Communities, today released the following statement following Governor Scott’s veto of SB 106 yesterday:
“We thank Governor Rick Scott for his veto of SB 106, the so-called “Whiskey and Wheaties” bill. This decision will not only preserve jobs and small businesses, but will also keep our state a safer place for everyone, including young people and tourists. Since the Legislature passed this contentious bill with only the slimmest of margins, Governor Scott’s veto not only reflects his commitment to good policy, but also sound process, and we applaud his leadership.”

Florida Council for Safe Communities Applauds Supreme Court Ruling on Slot Machines

Posted on May 18, 2017

John Giotis, Chair of the Florida Council for Safe Communities, released the following statement today regarding the Supreme Court’s ruling on slot machines:
“We applaud the Florida Supreme Court ruling today that rejects the expansion of gambling in our state. This unanimous decision is good news for Florida families and Florida’s economy. Tourists from all over the world can continue to enjoy our world-class and family-friendly attractions, and Florida residents will not be saddled with the dangerous by-products of gambling in their communities. The Court and Attorney General Pam Bondi got this issue exactly right, and we are grateful for their leadership.”

Florida Council Says Fracking Ban Not Necessary

Posted on March 14, 2017

John Giotis, Chair of the Florida Council for Safe Communities, made the following statement regarding Senate Bill 442:
“Senate Bill 442, which would ban hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, in Florida, is an unnecessary overreaction to activists who believe fracking puts Florida residents at risk. As our name indicates, the Florida Council for Safe Communities opposes all public policies that endanger our citizens, and we oppose this bill because there is no compelling evidence that a fracking ban is necessary to protect our citizens.
“On the contrary, fracking has been used safely in the United States for many decades. The EPA, among others, has studied the practice and concluded that there is no evidence that it adversely impacts drinking water resources. The cleaner-burning natural gas it produces has actually helped to reduce carbon emissions significantly, contributing to the health of our environment.
“Banning a safe technology that holds the promise of unleashing even more of our state’s energy resources based on emotion rather than science is shortsighted. We urge Florida legislators to look at the facts and reject the false idea that banning fracking will keep Floridians safer.”
