8th Annual Great St. Pete Cupcake Contest Registration Opens Today
The Morean Arts Center invites you to compete in a city-wide search for St. Petersburg’s BEST CUPCAKE. This is the 8th Annual Great St. Pete Cupcake Contest, celebrating artistry in a unique way. The contest will be hosted at the Morean Center for Clay located in the Warehouse Arts District at 420 22nd Street South – Saturday, August 25 from 12-3 p.m.
Following last year’s 100th birthday celebration in honor of the Morean’s 100th anniversary, close to 100 bakers competed, and expect to have a similar number for the 8th Annual contest! A $15 entry fee allows each participant to enter one submission. A minimum of 4 delicious cupcakes are required for entry so that the judges can taste each submission.
Registration is officially open as of June 1, and contestants may complete entry forms and liability waivers via the Morean Arts Center’s website. Deadline for entering the contest is Monday, August 20; although the number of contestants has been expanded, the Morean Arts Center expects to max out as usual, so early registration is encouraged.
First and Second Place awards will be given in both Novice and Professional categories as well as the People’s Choice award. The Morean Arts Center will continue to accept entries for additional categories including Youth/Teen for those aspiring bakers ages 10-16 years old, and the Specialty category for those choosing to offer Gluten Free or Vegan recipes.
The winners in 2017 were: First Place Professional: Alexis Blanton; Pancake Breakfast at Tiffany’s First Place Novice: Michael Ash; Samoa First Place Specialty: Vincent House; Black Bean S’mores First Place Youth/Teen: Rachel O’Brien; Chocolate Chip Carrot Cake People’s Choice: Michelle Saxton; Pick of the Patch Pumpkin
Over 500 contestants have competed in this contest over the past six years, and the Morean Arts Center is expecting yet another phenomenal turnout this year. Cupcakes will be judged on icing/frosting, flavor/texture and presentation/creativity for a total of 50 points, which allows plenty of room for edible creativity. The winners will receive bragging rights around St. Petersburg and a handmade cupcake trophy by a local artist to be announced later this summer.
The winning cupcakes will enjoy fame and fortune as a celebrity on the Morean website, Facebook page and city-wide media. Awards announced at 3 p.m. The People’s Choice award will be voted on by the attending audience. Participants in the contest are encouraged to bring sufficient quantities for the public to taste, but not required. Votes will be tallied and winner of the People’s Choice Award announced at 3 p.m. $5 admission will be collected to help support the Morean Arts Center’s mission of Connecting People with Art. Admission includes 5 ballots, additional ballots can be purchased for $1 (cash or credit).
Registration will be capped at 100 contestants. Please send in forms as soon as possible. Multiple submissions are allowed, but each flavor entered needs to be accompanied by a separate registration form and entry fee. For information or questions on how to enter the contest, please call the Morean Arts Center at 727.822.7872 or go online and download the entry form at MoreanArtsCenter.org
The Morean Arts Center Showcases Relationship Between Nature and Art in Upcoming May Exhibitions
Opening reception during Second Saturday
ArtWalk on Saturday, May 12, 5pm-9pm
The Morean Arts Center’s (MAC) upcoming exhibitions Leslie Neumann: Manna from Heaven…and Earth and Water over the Bridge: Contemporary Seascapes explore the relationship between art and nature and are on view May 12 through June 29. The opening reception is held during Second Saturday ArtWalk on Saturday, May 12, from 5pm-9pm.
Artist and environmental activist Leslie Neumann, presents a new body of work focusing on the power of nature in these troubling times. Neumann has lived and worked in Aripeka, Fla., located on the Gulf of Mexico, 50 miles north of St. Petersburg. Aripeka is a small Florida town reminiscent of what the state looked like 50 years ago. She divides her time between art-making, expressing the beauty of Aripeka, environmental activism, and working to preserve and expand the surrounding 15,000 acres of coastal marsh.
Neumann is an artist that specializes in painting wetlands and cosmic images using a technique called encaustic on panel. Using a combination of oil paints and hot wax, she achieves striking images with deep, rich colors and texture.
Water Over the Bridge: Contemporary Seascapes is a collaboration between the MAC’s Curator of Exhibitions Amanda Cooper and New York City curator D. Dominick Lombardi. This exhibition features the works of artists from both the New York City metro area and Tampa Bay area artists, creating a provocative, cross-country dialog. Selected artists include Selina Roman, Anne Bowen, Babs Reingold, Carolina Cleere, Margaret LeJeune, Rieko Fujinami, Bill Gusky, Dale Leifeste, China Marks and William Thompson.
Cooper stated, “Both exhibitions, while focusing on environmental issues that have become political hot-buttons, are vastly different in their approach. Where Water over the Bridge is sometimes a searing indictment of the current situation and how we as citizens of the planet have failed to protect it, Leslie’s exhibition addresses land conservation by displaying nature’s raw beauty and power. One is a loud protest — a call to action — the other is more of a love-in; a visual celebration of nature that serves a reminder of what could be lost if we continue on this destructive path.”
The MAC’s exhibitions are free and open to the public Monday through Saturday, 9am-5pm and Sunday, Noon-5pm. Neumann will be hosting an Artist Talk discussing art and environmental activism on Thursday, June 21, 6pm-7:30pm.
“We hope people will leave with a renewed awareness of global conservation issues and a sense of urgency to take action, whatever that looks like for them,” said Cooper.
The Morean Arts Center, with roots dating back to 1917 as the Art Club of St. Petersburg, focuses on an innovative, community-oriented approach to art and art education. The mission of the Morean Arts Center is to connect people with art and to contribute to the economic development of the region. Operating under the Morean Arts Center includes the Chihuly Collection, Glass Studio & Hot Shop and the Morean Center for Clay.

Morean Arts Center Increases Financial Aid Assistance to 2018 Summer Campers
Ten percent of qualifying Summer Art & Clay Camp
attendees are expected to receive scholarships this year
The Morean Arts Center, the oldest gallery south of Atlanta, is gearing up for a creative and educational Summer Art & Clay Camp! This year, in celebration of the Morean moving into its next century of the arts in St. Petersburg, more summer camp scholarships will be offered than ever before!
Scholarships are an important part of camp at the Morean as they allow children to cultivate creativity and interest in the arts for those who otherwise wouldn’t be able to experience it. Creative thinking, problem solving, communication and empathy—these attributes and skills, learned through the making of art, contribute to the mental and emotional growth of a child.
These camps are art-focused and offer children ages 4-16 the opportunity to experience guided art projects as well as access to the rotating exhibitions in the main gallery or at the Morean Center for Clay. On-site field trips to the neighboring Chihuly Collection and Hot Shop where live glass blowing demonstrations provide education on local art and the science behind it are also incorporated in select camp weeks.
There are even specialized camp options for teens to discover the world of art. Teens can explore camp options in glass, animation, jewelry, photography, clay and more.
As creative summer camps fill up fast, its recommended parents fill out the Scholarship Application on the website (MoreanArtsCenter.org) and reserve a spot as early as possible. The Morean Arts Center also offers 1-Day Art Camps for Pinellas County no school days, Spring Break Camps, Thanksgiving Break Camp, and Holiday Camp.
In addition to camps, the Morean Arts Center and Morean Center for Clay offers FREE family fun with Saturdays @ the Morean, located at the downtown location and Sundays @ the Morean, located at the Morean Center for Clay.
Camps are offered at the Morean’s main location located at 719 Central Avenue, St. Petersburg, Fla. 33701, and the Morean Center for Clay, a beautifully-renovated train station located at 420 22nd Street South, St. Petersburg, Fla. 33712.
To apply for financial assistance for Summer Camp 2018, please visit MoreanArtsCenter.org and click on the education tab to locate Camps & Events.
If you’re interested in donating to provide additional Summer Art & Clay Camp scholarships, please contact the Director of Development, Anna Kuhlman, at 727.822.7872 ext. 2120 or email [email protected].
