The Florida Legislature today met in a joint session to hear the Governor’s address and mark the start of the 2023 legislative session. In response, Florida Senator Shevrin Jones (SD-34) released the following statement:
“It is clear that Gov. DeSantis will always put his own political ambition ahead of the people of Florida. The dangerous DeSantis agenda relentlessly attacks women, the LGBTQ community, people of color — people historically demonized and targeted — and people’s very right to exist. The Governor spouts off about ‘freedom’ as he continues his assault on our fundamental freedoms to learn, to think, to speak our minds. Meanwhile, families across the state are feeling crushed by the cost of housing, healthcare, and the property insurance crisis. And where is the Governor? Sitting on his hands. He’s helping billionaires dodge their taxes and handing out tax giveaways to ultra-wealthy corporations and his billionaire donors ahead of his 2024 campaign for President. The people deserve better.”
