The Florida Department of Education today voted on new policies, including mandates relating to the suppression of African American curriculum as well as infringements on LGBTQ+ students in K-12 educational institutions.
Florida Senator Shevrin Jones (D-Miami Gardens) released the following statement:
It is shameful that rather than running a campaign focused on his vision for the future, Gov. DeSantis has staked his presidential ambitions on draconian, dangerous policies that will harm Floridians for years to come. The curriculum standards and guidelines approved today by his appointees on the State Board of Education are the latest instance of this administration undermining public education.
By whitewashing African American history and chipping away at LGBTQ+ youth safety in schools, Florida’s Department of Education is making it abundantly clear that they have no desire to do their job and ensure student success in the classroom and beyond. I applaud the students, parents, educators, and advocates who spoke up today in opposition of these changes and will continue to fight by their side so that every Floridian can unlock their full potential.
