How to Protect Yourself from Medicare Fraud

Posted on March 29, 2018

Every year, Medicare fraud affects consumers and companies across the nation. Estimates say that last year alone, there was over $1 billion in fraudulent Medicare billings . Not only does Medicare fraud inflate the cost of medical care for everyone, it can also compromise your private medical information, including past Medicare statements, claims, and even confidential items like your social security number. That’s why it’s important to take steps to defend yourself from a potential identity thief, especially when it comes to your medical records.

Dr. Ryan Curran

First and foremost, protect your confidential information. When discussing your Medicare information — such as a Medicare ID number and Health Plan details — always take precautions to ensure that your personal information is protected. If an identity thief gains access to your Health Plan ID, they can access your physicians, order prescriptions, and even file a health insurance claim.

Starting in April, the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services will issue new Medicare ID cards with a unique alphanumeric ID number rather than your social security number, but it’s still important to “guard your card” and keep it safe like you would a credit card or your social security card.

It’s also important to always keep a close eye on your account’s activity to spot anything unusual or incorrect. In addition to reviewing receipts, dates, and billing statements, make sure the details of your Medicare claims correctly match up with the services you received. You can check at MyMedicare.gov or by calling 1-800-MEDICARE.

And don’t overlook the Explanation of Benefits form sent from your insurance company. The form details how much you have been billed for a specific claim, what your insurance covers, and the deductible amount you’re ultimately responsible for. Compare the explanation of benefits to your medical provider’s receipt to detect any discrepancies that could hint toward a potential identity theft.

Some Medicare fraud has been linked to companies or individuals offering “free services or products” in exchange for your confidential information, including your Health Plan ID number. Be wary of phone calls or emails that ask for sensitive Medicare information, such as your Medicare ID, as they could be an attempt to steal your identity. Identity thieves may also call or email pretending to be a medical insurance professional in order to obtain your confidential information. If this happens, hang up or don’t reply, then immediately report it to your health insurance provider.

Medicare fraud can complicate your financial well-being, including your insurance record and credit report. It’s crucial to report any suspicious activity as soon as possible to prevent further fraudulent activity.

You can report suspected Medicare fraud to your health insurance company, to the toll-free number at 1-800-MEDICARE, or online to the Office of the Inspector General on the official Medicare website.

Learn more about the steps you should take to report Medicare fraud here.

Florida Board of Governors Confirms UNF’s Sixth President David Szymanski

Posted on March 29, 2018

The Florida Board of Governors confirmed the selection of Dr. David Szymanski as UNF’s sixth president today during its regular BOG meeting on campus. He will begin Thursday, May 31.

Szymanski is currently the dean of the Carl H. Lindner College of Business and professor of marketing at the University of Cincinnati, which has a campus of more than 44,000 students. Under his leadership as Lindner dean, enrollment in the business college has grown some 50 percent for undergraduate and nearly 200 percent for graduate students, with first-year retention rates as high as 93 percent and six-year graduation rates increasing 1,000 basis points to 71 percent.

During his eight years at UC, Szymanski has also led curriculum changes for undergraduate and graduate students, revising the MBA to be more flexible for the professional and time-constrained student. New masters and doctoral degrees in demand by students and businesses have been added in addition to new graduate certificate programs. Additionally, the College launched new online courses and degree programs.

Lindner’s MBA program has gone from being unranked to now being a Top 35 full-time and Top 25 part-time public program by Bloomberg Businessweek. In addition, the College now has Top 25 master’s programs in accounting, analytics, applied economics, finance, marketing and tax as well as Top 10 undergraduate programs in accounting, marketing and microeconomics.

With Szymanski’s guidance, Lindner is now the most profitable college at UC, generating 81 percent of the net operating profit on the academic side of the enterprise. He has helped raise more than $70M, and in fiscal year 2017, the College raised more than $20M, making it the first academic unit in the university’s history to break the $20M threshold.

Prior to joining UC, he was the director of the Center for Retailing Studies at Texas A&M University. Szymanski has served on a number of corporate and professional boards, including several NCAA boards/committees and currently sits on the board of directors of Office Depot. He earned his doctorate and MBA, both with a marketing emphasis, from the University of Wisconsin at Madison and his bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of North Carolina at Asheville.

Szymanski will succeed John A. Delaney, who has served as UNF president for the last 15 years. He retires as University president Thursday, May 31. In addition to Delaney, UNF has had four other permanent presidents, including founding president Dr. Thomas Carpenter (1969-1980), Dr. Curtis McCray (1982-1988), Dr. Adam Herbert (1989-1998) and Dr. Anne Hopkins (1999-2000).

Four Arrested in Connection to 150 Stolen Guns, One Still Wanted

Posted on March 29, 2018

Attorney General Pam Bondi’s Office of Statewide Prosecution, the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement today announced the arrest of four men relating to more than 150 stolen firearms. The guns were stolen from stores in and around the Central Florida area. Authorities arrested, Richard Jernigan, 30, Robert Tilmon, 31, Raymond Williams, 28, and Jermeil Williams, 28, in connection to the burglaries. These men were allegedly involved in numerous armed burglaries of firearms and other valuable items for several years. Authorities are still searching for Kentric Collier, 28, in connection to the case.

“The ATF and the FDLE did a tremendous job in stopping a dangerous gun burglary ring targeting firearms dealers. The charges against these individuals are alarming—stealing guns to sell on our streets. My Office of Statewide Prosecution will aggressively prosecute this case to ensure justice is done,” said Attorney General Bondi.

“ATF’s primary focus is protecting the public by reducing violent crime”, said Special Agent in Charge Daryl McCrary. “ATF continues to aggressively pursue violent offenders and will continue to protect and serve communities with our law enforcement partners.”

Beginning in late 2016 and into 2017, ATF began investigating burglaries of Federal Firearms Licensees stores in and around the Central Florida area. A review of intelligence aided in determining some of the burglaries had similar distinguishing characteristics, such as the use of sledgehammers and pry bars to gain entry. The men are believed to be involved in more than five burglaries of FFLs that resulted in the loss of more than 150 firearms.

The investigation found that the suspects allegedly sold many of the firearms in the Orlando area within days of the burglaries. According to ATF, law enforcement has recovered approximately 35 of the 156 stolen firearms, most seized from prohibited individuals involved in previous violent criminal acts. These suspects are also allegedly involved in numerous burglaries targeting cash, electronics, firearm stores, jewelry, safes, and other valuable items in Orange, Polk, and Seminole counties

All five suspects face separate charges in connection to burglaries, grand theft of a firearm, grand theft and racketeering. The Altamonte Springs Police Department, the Longwood Police Department, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, the Orlando Police Department and the Winter Park Police Department assisted in this investigation.

The Attorney General Office of Statewide Prosecution will prosecute the case.

New JMI and Goldwater Policy Brief on Common Sense Solutions for Better Government

Posted on March 28, 2018

A new policy brief by The James Madison Institute and the Goldwater Institute finds three opportunities for Florida lawmakers to reduce the growth of the regulatory state.

Entitled, “Structural Reform for a More Prosperous Florida: Common Sense Solutions for Better Government,” the brief touts three main reforms including the Right to Earn a Living Act, a state-based REINS Act and the Congressional Review Act.

“Florida succeeds when we provide an environment for prosperity for all, and when we allow individuals to pursue their passions and create economic growth. While Florida does a tremendous job relative to other states, there is always more we can pursue. In many ways, the regulatory system of the 20th Century needs to adapt to the innovations present in the 21st. That requires ever-consistent vigilance on the part of our policy makers to remove barriers to prosperity,” said JMI Vice President of Policy and report co-author, Sal Nuzzo.

Examining just the past 20 years, the Sunshine State consistently has one of the best business climates in the United States and our state government has one of the most efficient and effective operations in the entire country.

Still, Florida has room for improvement.

“There has been a growing trend toward prohibiting people from working in the job of their choice or starting a business without first seeking government approval—even if they pose no health or safety threat to the public,” Goldwater Institute Director of National Litigation, and co-author of the report, Jon Riches said. “Today, about one in four jobs require government permission, and these unnecessarily high barriers to entry are keeping Floridians and Americans across the country from earning a living. That’s not how the Land of Opportunity should work.”

The policy brief, “Structural Reform for a More Prosperous Florida: Common Sense Solutions for Better Government,” is available here.
