Stand Up For North Florida Expands Mission

Posted on December 4, 2017

The coalition, which formed last year to focus on conservation needs of North Florida,
will now work to ensure the region has a strong voice on a variety of issues

Leaders from North Florida today gathered at the state capitol to announce an expanded mission for Stand Up For North Florida, a coalition formed earlier this year to focus on the water and conservation needs of North and North Central Florida. The group’s chairman, former Congressman Steve Southerland, was joined by a cross-section of local leaders from across the region to announce that the group has filed to become a 501(c)(4) organization, which will allow it to have a stronger presence and influence during the upcoming legislative session.
“Stand Up For North Florida exists to ensure that the volume of our voices in Tallahassee is just as loud as those from the rest of the state,” said Southerland. “Florida is a big state with a lot of interests competing for attention here in the capitol, and we believe that the time has come for an organized, united effort to protect the vital natural resources and the best interests of the citizens of North Florida.”
“When we started last year, we said that inequitable funding was going to be a problem, and, indeed, that is the case,” continued Southerland. “With 85 percent of the money designated for regional specific projects in the 2017-18 budget going to South Florida at the expense of the rest of the state, up from 75 percent the previous year, it is clear that that’s not right, and we have had enough. We plan to work together with members of our legislative delegation and stakeholders from across our communities to make the case that North Florida is a crucial part of our state and our policy priorities should reflect that.”
“I look forward to working with these dedicated local leaders and my colleagues in the Legislature to protect our important natural resources and to look out for the interests of the hardworking men and women of North Florida,” said State Representative Stan McClain (R-23).
Stand Up For North Florida board members Wayne Harris, former Okaloosa County Commissioner, and David Biddle, Gilchrist County Republican State Committeeman, also made remarks in support of the coalition’s expanded priorities.
The following leaders also attended the press conference:
Tom Barnette from Hernando County, President of Euro-American Tours
Wanda Range from Gadsden County, Mayor of Midway
Leslie Steele from Gadsden County, City Manager of Midway
Maureen France from Volusia County, former Deland City Commissioner
Christine Dobkowski from Marion County, Mayor of Belleview
Charlotte Barber from Leon County, retired teacher
Kathryn Babcock from Leon County
Tom Barber from Marion County, Legislative Aide to Rep. Stan McClain

Florida Department of Transportation Recognizes Glenn Burns with Garry Balogh Award

Posted on December 4, 2017

On Friday, October 6, Mr. Glenn Burns of Montverde was presented the Garry Balogh Inspiring Excellence Award; the highest honor bestowed by the Florida Department of Transportation, Scenic Highways Program. The award recognizes leadership, innovation, stewardship, and achievements that have made a significant and lasting impact on a scenic highway, scenic highway community, or the statewide program.
Mr. Burns, a local leader and 17-year advocate for the Green Mountain Scenic Highway, accepted the award at the Oakland Nature Preserve; celebrating there with thirty close friends and family. The award was established in 2015 to honor Garry Balogh, a popular Department of Transportation employee responsible for the designation and successful implementation of many Florida Scenic Highways, including Green Mountain. Mr. Burns served the Green Mountain Scenic Byway as community liaison, administrator and grant writer, but also spent countless hours representing the byway at public meetings and special events. His deep institutional knowledge helped guide new board members, and he is described by many as Green Mountain’s greatest champion.
Garry Balogh and Glenn Burns actually worked together closely for many years. According to Green Mountain Chairman Greg Gensheimer, “Like Garry, Glenn has lead from behind the scenes. There’s no rah-rah speeches, no war cries, no rallying of the troops. When the rest of us got to where we were going, Glenn and Garry were there and we understood the effect of their efforts.” Mike Dew, Secretary, Florida Department of Transportation, offered his congratulations to Mr. Burns, and noted, “Glenn’s contributions to the Green Mountain Scenic Byway are significant and lasting.”

UnitedHealthcare Celebrates Season of Giving With Record-Setting Contribution to Step Up For Students

Posted on December 4, 2017

More than 400 children in Collier County benefit from Florida Tax Credit Scholarships

In this season of giving, UnitedHealthcare announced today a record-breaking contribution of $15 million to Step Up For Students, the nonprofit that helps administer the needs-based Florida Tax Credit Scholarship Program.
Step Up For Students celebrated the support and contributions of UnitedHealthcare during an event at Naples Adventist Christian School. Since 2009, UnitedHealthcare has contributed more than $88 million to Step Up For Students, providing scholarships for nearly 17,000 students across Florida to attend either an out-of-district public school or private school that best suits their academic needs.
“UnitedHealthcare is proud to partner with Step Up For Students and support this impressive organization which invests in the future of our children,” said Nicholas Zaffiris, CEO of UnitedHealthcare of South Florida. “Especially during the holiday season, it’s important to support programs in our communities that help others. Step Up provides hope for Florida’s children to access a quality education that best fits their needs, and we are glad to support such a worthy initiative.”
Step Up For Students, the nonprofit organization that helps administer the income-based FTC Scholarship Program, is providing opportunities for nearly 105,000 lower-income students across Florida this school year with 441 residing in Collier County
“None of this would be possible without the support of the community and contributions of organizations like UnitedHealthcare,” said Doug Tuthill, president of Step Up For Students. “I’m just so pleased to know that together with our partners we are making such an important difference in our state by giving students the educational opportunities they deserve.”
At the event, Audrey Wainwright, principal at Naples Adventist Christian School, shared her support for the Step Up organization and thanked UnitedHealthcare for its ongoing commitment to the program. She encouraged other companies to consider participation.
“I have seen first-hand the benefits of this scholarship program,” Wainwright said. “So many of our students have made tremendous improvements with the help of Step Up For Students, leading to a better future for themselves and our state.”
Scholarship parent Onetia Lansiquot, who spoke at the event, said the scholarship has allowed her to provide her daughter, Leilah, a second-grader at Naples Adventist, with strong academics in a comfortable, secure environment.
“Without Step Up For Students, Leilah would likely be going to a charter or public school,” Lansiquot said before thanking UnitedHealthcare. “I’m sure her progress would be OK, but being in a private school, she gets that extra attention, that extra little push, ensuring that her educational needs are met. You are truly changing lives by investing in the future of our children’s education, and my family is so grateful.”

Online Risks Are Routine for Teens, Most Bounce Back

Posted on December 4, 2017

Teens routinely encounter online risks, such as sexual solicitations, cyberbullying and explicit material, but research shows that the negative effects of such exposure appear to be temporary, vanishing for most teens in less than a week.
A new study from the University of Central Florida, Pennsylvania State and Ohio State found that typical teens seem to be resilient and cope with most online risks, moving beyond the temporary negative impacts quickly.
The researchers conducted a web-based diary study of 68 teens. They chronicled the teens’ online experiences for eight weeks and used pre-validated psychological scales to assess how negative online experiences impacted teens’ emotional state and well-being. While they found that teens reported more negative emotions during the weeks they experienced cyberbullying and explicit content, these effects were gone only a week later. The findings will be presented at the 2018 conference on Computer-Supported Cooperative Work and Social Computing next year.
“I think if there is a message here, it is that teens are being exposed a lot, but they bounce back and show resiliency,” said Bridget McHugh, who worked on the study while a Ph.D student at UCF and is now a leadership development consultant at Ohio State University. “We’re not exactly sure how they are learning the coping skills, but they are and that’s good news.”
McHugh said coping may be happening through other online interactions with friends or through support from social media communities.
Pamela Wisniewski, a computer science assistant professor at UCF in Orlando, and co-author of the study, concluded that more research needs to be conducted into how teens learn to cope in the constantly changing social media world.
“I know parents are afraid of all the dangers out there, especially because teens seem to be practically tethered to the internet with their mobile devices,” she said. “But we may be over problematizing online risks and creating another stressor for teens and parents. What we should be looking at is, what does this all mean for the everyday teen?”
“We absolutely acknowledge there are cases where teens experience severe online risks, such as cyberbullying, that lead to long-term negative outcomes, like committing suicide,” Wisniewski said. “These are terrible, but they are also extreme cases. The good news is that in our study, we found that these extreme scenarios aren’t the average teen experience.”
She suggests parents help their children learn to manage risk, and that can’t happen if there isn’t open communication. But that’s a challenge when it comes to the topic of online activity. In another study, Wisniewski found that teens don’t communicate about all the risks they encounter online because parents tend to overreact.
Wisniewski has a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and joined UCF in 2015. Her research on adolescent online safety has won best paper awards (top 1%) and best paper honorable mentions (top 5%) at premier conferences in her field, as well as being featured by Science Daily, Forbes and NPR.
McHugh earned her Ph.D from University of Central Florida in 2016. Her work focuses on the benefits and drawbacks of social media and other forms of digital communication among adolescents and young professionals.
This research was funded in part by the National Science Foundation under grant CNS-1018302. Any opinion, findings, and conclusions or recommendations expressed in this material are those of the authors and do not necessarily reflect the views of the U.S. National Science Foundation.
