Crime Victims’ Rights Advocates Hold Press Conference in St. Petersburg to Announce Major Endorsement of Marsy’s Law for Florida

WHAT: Advocates of crime victims’ rights are holding a press conference tomorrow to announce a major endorsement of Marsy’s Law for Florida, an effort to amend the state constitution to provide equal rights for crime victims. Marsy’s Law for Florida is currently under consideration by the Florida Constitution Revision Commission (CRC) as Proposal 96. If approved by the CRC, a proposed constitutional amendment providing equal rights for crime victims will be placed on the 2018 General Election ballot.

Sen. Rodriguez holds press conference with Equality Florida on SB 696 Conversion Therapy Ban

State Senator José Javier Rodríguez (D-Miami) and State Representative Evan Jenne (D- Dania Beach) will hold a press conference on Thursday to discuss their legislation which would outlaw highly controversial methods still used by licensed professionals in Florida to force a minor’s sexual orientation. SB 696 and HB 717 would ban the use of “conversion therapy,” a largely discredited practice opposed by the American Psychiatric Association and already illegal in at least nine states throughout the country.

The lawmakers will be joined by Broward County Commissioner Nan Rich, Jon Harris Maurer of Equality Florida, and conversion therapy survivor Jose Vega.

Concerned that efforts have slowed to replace a Confederate general with the likeness of renowned educator Mary McLeod Bethune in our nation’s Capitol, state Senator Perry Thurston on Thursday will hold a press conference to call for swift legislative action on Senate Concurrent Resolution 1360. Joining Senator Thurston will be former Senator Geraldine Thompson, and members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., the oldest Greek-letter organization established in the United States by black college women.

The event will be begin at 9:30 am on Thursday, April 6, 2017, on the steps of the Old Capitol, Monroe Street side.

State Senator Daphne Campbell (D-Miami) is holding a press conference at noon today to discuss her legislation requiring mental health evaluation for anyone who seeks a concealed weapons permit in Florida. Representative Nicholas Duran, who is sponsoring the measure in the House, will also be in attendance.

Senator Linda Stewart (D-Orlando), Democratic Leader Janet Cruz (D-Tampa), and Representative Lori Berman (D-Lantana) will hold a press conference and rally tomorrow to gain support for their Equal Pay for Equal Work bills, SB 410/HB 319.
Named the “Helen Gordon Davis Fair Pay Protection Act” in honor of Helen Gordon Davis for her hard work in the field of equal pay, the bill hopes to strengthen state laws in this arena. If enacted, the bills would specify which factors employers can use to decide to pay employees differently, such as education or experience based on seniority or merit, and would prohibit employers from screening job applicants based on prior wages. It would also bar employers from taking retaliatory action against an employee who discloses their wages to a coworker and prohibits employers from discrimination towards employees based on their sex or gender identity.
Rallies in support of the legislation are also taking place in Tampa, Orlando, Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, West Palm Beach and St. Augustine tomorrow.
